Some mechanics will suggest a higher than factory recommended weight oil for high mileage engine's to:
Slow oil consumption (burn)
Increase oil pressure due to internal engine wear (clearance specs loosening).

Old school thinking is old. Modern engines don't always respond the way old school thinkers expect. 'Thicker' oil can increase consumption and wear in modern engines with low tension rings.

If the engine didn't already have a problem, it can cause big problems.
Depends on the internal condition of the engine though.


If there's no damn good reason to use it, don't use it.

Use what the factory recommended on the oil cap.

Oh, I see you're in Brazil. Hondas recommended spec for that area might not be exactly the same as spec for our cars in North America.

I expect to see 5w20 on the oil cap here.

Proper oil viscosity for a 98 civic is 5w30 vis oil. So 200.000 usa miles converted over to Canadian kilometres thats 321.000 kms on a his 98 Civic If his mechanic is rec 20w50 viscosity oil it must be going thru alot of oil or smoking the blues out the back, if its not leaking externally than its consuming it in the engine. if thats the case i would run something like a 5w40 shell rottela diesel oil and just drive it into the ground at this point its cheaper than replacing the engine. thats my opinion

i would think even though its a high mileage engine and lets say for argument say, it does use some oil" and blow some blue smoke, still its a honda it should still last fgb000 a good looong time.

I'd try 10w30 high mileage in it,
owners manual recommends it in hotter climates/ summertime

On the Middle of the second page is saying the recommended oil viscosity.


Hi, my d16y8 engine is running preety smoothly. It has 221 000 kilometers runned.
and It doesnt exausths smoke on the muffler what so ever. And is preety silent too, It justs make a louder noise during the start. But after 2 or 3 minutes is getting silent, then after 5 min the engine is silent, for a 20 years old engine.
And I allways wait 2, 3 ir 4 minutes after ignition to start moving the car, I wait for It to get warmer.

The temperature here varies between 0 ~ 35c° (that is 32 to 95 farenheit).
And I Just checked the car's manual and pasted the foto, and there says: Honda 20w50, api-sj.
And the oil cap says:check owners manual.
But the service manual chart for the oil says 10w30 on my temperature.

Here in São Paulo- Brazil the most Common oil that we can find on any Honda dealer is the Honda 10w30 non synthetic. I have never seen a Honda 20w50 down here.

What should i use, is there an Castrol GTX with a right viscosity for me?

WOW!... for Honda to recommend a 20w50 vis Oil in a owners manual located in brazil outside temperature climate must get extremely Hot there.? thats a first for me to see that. in North America usually thicker oil is used Only if the vehicle is on a race track being pushed hard thats were you would find drivers useing thicker viscosity oil"s. Yes i can see honda recommends a thick 20w50 but at the same time im not sure why You have not seen it for retail purchase in Brazil either makes no sense? in all honestey i think a 10w30 oil should be ok better fuel economy and power over a thick like mallases 20w50 any day.

rogerscivic In this Case with fgb00 98 Civic its not the case. But lets say it did Lets Say... someone out there negleted there oil changes or
simply extended them on there high mileage Honda and now its been Neglected to the point where you can see some blue smoke spuuying out the back. does that mean Just because its a Honda it can take neglect from the owner.? for Your FYI Yes Hondas are well engineered engines but still if maintenance is neglected on the engine side Oil Consumption follows afterword and its NOT pretty for everything else that blue smoke is a sign of a worn engine ,rings or valve seals, and will shorten the life span of 02 sensores and cataylitic converter and foul up spark plugs this is exactly why You Dont want to Neglect Your engines Oil changes i do mine Religousley to avoid this. cheers!

Goes for PCV valve as well on 6th gens. At least inspect it every third or 4th oil change by shaking it and listen for ball inside to rattle. If it doesn't rattle then repalce it.

Oil burning engines damage 02 sensores tips they get coated with Oil going downstream thru the exhaust also eventually damages the catalytic converter thats working overtime to clean up the blue smoke before coming out of the exhaust and Yes Good thing to chack is the PCV as mentioned by (Megalodong) i have owned some high mileage hondas before Never had to replace PCV valve although its a good thing to check but from my experience with high mileage Hondas they dont tend to fail or clog up that easy. i may add personally i would Never own a Oil burner of any kind Just for this reason. Just My Two Cents

unsure of the reasons of the difference? That year were the first batch off Honda Brazil, if memory does not fail me.

Maybe something to do with the **** we call gasoline in Brazil
