98 civic belt question

So driving last night and the car just stopped going popped the hood and theres a belt missing it looks like it goes onto the alternator but it was dark so i cant tell for sure just wanna know if anyone can help determine what belt broke and needs replaced. Thanks guys.

Well it is not you timing belt since the timing belt can not be seen without removing the timing belt covers.

So it will be a serpentine belt. If you do not see a belt going to the alternator then yes the alternator belt broke.

The alternator belt shouldn’t cause it to instantly stop running. However, it will eventually die when the battery dies.

Turned out to be the timing belt just some idiot forgot to put the cover back on so thats where my initial mistake was made but got it fixed now to work on a few sensors.

I hope the valves and pistons are OK. This is an interference engine, so this could be very bad.
