^^^ good suggestion, if you just track the car for the most part don't even use a filter man, just get a big funnel opening to direct all the air coming in through that hole into the pipe, basically you could weld on a a piece of metal to come off the bottom of the pipe to the front of the bumper where the hole is so there is no loss of air not getting to the intake, and then have a lil wire mesh inside the funnel near the piping hole to cover you from large debris and then ur all set, and would def look clean as **** when painted black, sleeper style, and most DEF FUNCTIONAL!!!!! I love it man, i might try this soon... just for the hell of it...

This site has so many haters it ain't even funny. I have a FIPK2 in my ride and I plan on putting a tube from the bottom of my R34 front bumper and have it routed into the heat shield. I also want to route a tube from the side vents of VIS CF hood into the heat shield. I do plan on getting a better filter for the intake until then I'll stick with the K&N. Before you haters start to chime in I live in so cal also. the littler of water that gets in the engine bay is going to evaporate before doing any damage. Water getting into the engine bay give me a fukin break. How bout when you steam clean your engine or when chumps use a water hose to hose down there engine. How bout when you go to a car wash and the under carriage shoots small amounts of water into the engine bay. I do whatever I want to my ride. I do whatever floats my boat. My ride looks clean and I'm still going to waste my money on a kamikaze header and a exhaust of my choosing. All I know is I see results. When your in traffic in so cal and you have your blinker on to change lanes and nobody is letting you in and when I step on I'm able to pass up cars to squeeze in traffic. When my ride was stock I could not speed up fast enough to squeeze in.

Current Mods:
Tighten throttle body cable
Re-routed throttle body coolant hose
FIPK2
Nitto gen tires 215/45/17
Areco racing wheels
R34 body kit
Vis CF Hood Evo

i seen the set up you are planning to do. it was on the ENDLESS honda challenge EG. they cut a hole in their front bumper and had an air duct run up to their short ram intake that was surrounded by a heat shield

most(99%) of people on this site don't really know anything.

they go to high school and think they know more than a driver that track their car and who works as an real engineer. my friends work and own some of the largest car shops in united states. i know the best drivers in the nation. my friend finished 2nd in the formula D competition. i get my info from them and my engineering knowlege. unless you surmerge ur intake into a pot of water, no problem.

have fun with ur situp

whoa whoa whoa... I'm totally on your side bro as stated in my previous post, BUT......

Next time before you go thinking about telling people on a huge public site that you are friends with these Formula D drivers and about how your a "true" racer and know what ur doing because your friends know what they are doing... (personally i don't know where everyone seems to think that matters... knowing friends that know cars doesn't mean **** today guys... it's all about you knowing cars) BOTTOM LINE IS......!!!!!!

I just want to ask.(for sri) Have any one look under the hood when it rains? I did one time, The whole top left quarter will get all wet, from the water that is shooting off the tire as it spins. That is where most sri filter sits. (or maybe it is just me?)

You made a very astute observation. You are correct but think about the water that gets thru filter still has to travel thru the intake tube. If you have a metal intake tube it's going to have enough heat to evaporate some of the water, some water is going with the air into the TB then into the combustion chamber where it will evaporate with the air,Fuel, spark all ignite to power your engine. You have to have a substantial amount of water to hydrolock your ride.

back to the hydrolock thing again?? My dad told me his friend and him used to squirt water into their CARBURETOR and that yielded better performace.

Now, cant say that 99% of the ppl dont know anything or know non sense..... but still have to deal and perhaps help those.... not so knowledgeable.

Thats kind of what happens. A Civic isnt anything special.... it's a 1st car for many here... I think some ppl here are like.... 16. They use this car to learn.

I apologise before hand for being so off topic.

Oh, yes. I know all about water injection. Works VERY well.

In fact, take a spray bottle with water and squirt some into the intake (right at the throttle body or carburettor ) while revving the engine. The steam blasts all the carbon buildup out of the engine.

Water mist injection lowers the temperature and raises the density of the air/fuel charge. More power, better MPG. Too much, though, and the ecu may complain. Works like a dream on older engines.

And don't forget alcohol injection for those turbo guys.

I understand that many people have this as their 1st car. this is my 4th and it happens to be the newest car I have ever owned other than that it was a 1994 Saturn. So for me its do it right since I have been through the help yourself time with both of my Saturns since they did not make many parts for them. But I am kinda biased as well since when I was 16 my first ride was a 1984 Ford Escort.

I think I am getting some idea on why manufactures make aluminum/metal tube for CAI...simply because it conducts heat, when it sucks water in(not submerged) the heat that is generated on the TB will be high enough to evaporate them....second...it looks better....

Don't touch the CAI tube when the engine is hot....it is as hot as the engine itself.....

Noob question here

When the car is on with the stock airbox system, the little tube on the left hand side has some suction power. What is making it suck?

What's making it suck? It feels like a mild vaccum? Is there like some small electric motor in there.

the engine acts as a vacuum during the intake stroke. the pistons go down forcing a lower air pressure. the air from outside of the airbox is at a higher air pressure, the high air pressure naturally goes to a lower air pressure area. this is why the intake feels like it is sucking.

on edit: on ebay they do sell cheesey home-vacuum electric fan motors out of a vacuum that you use to clean your floors. it probably has some function, but it is pretty lame. but hey, if it works, i guess you can't knock it.

on a side note... i used to drive a 2000 Mustang GT that had a CAI kit on it. i drove it in some heavy rain and cracked the engine block. i wish i had the AEM bypass on my poor 'stang.

p.s. - i too live in southern california, so even if it doesn't rain often, it can still cause $4k-$5k worth of engine damage. *cries*

By installing a CAI with a large diameter pipe wont you loose some of that vaccum effect? I guess if the filter is exposed and your going fast enough for air to hit it would help but otherwise is that how people with CAI are loosing there low end power on our gen vics?

i alwasy thought what damage would a high power fan be? idk it woudlnt be like a turbo but it would still give forced induction... like 5-6 fans sequentially located.. with like 1hp each..

most of the vacuum comes from sizing of the intake manifold itself, the inlets to the cylinders can only let it so much air at a time. making the induction plumbing bigger just make it easier to get the air into the intake manifold and a CAI will direct air from a cooler location.

electric fans can run off battery power. you can put in a toggle switch so it isn't running all the time and eating all the battery's juice.

my friend just took me to a shop that makes steel piping. bougt a straight pipe and a u-bend pipe and cut to the right dimensions and welded it together

i almost hydro locked my car last saturday with this setup. drag raced at famosa on thursday, road raced on friday. but when i was at laguna seca on sat. it started pouring doing, i took in water into the engine. stalled. when it rains heavy, it can give u problems when you have it as low as I do. i have it about 9 inches above the ground

i have the stock intake on for now, and i do feel the loss of top end power

Ahh water is no biggy for me. I never drive unless its not gonna rain that day. Otherwise i take out my bad@ss 95HP 4-door 93 civic DX.

OK that setup would really be nice if it were heatwrapped. Anybody know if you can get any for cheap at like Lowes or Home Depot or anyplace? I dont mean cheap as in, it's gonna fall off in 2 days. I mean something that isnt rediculously expensive.

I've tried all kinds of custom intakes on my car. Right now I have a foam Tru Air Filter in a plastic paint container located near my throttle body. I have a one 90 degree 2" pvc pipe going to the throttle body and a series of 3" bends/straight pipe leading to a place right in front of my automatic transmission. The pipe extends downward till it is out of the engine bay. Basically it is like the oem air intake with bigger and less restricted airflow. It is the best intake for hp and tq gains.

've tried all of these previous designs mentioned in this tread and I am actually going to go back having the stock airbox and a non metal hose running to the passenger fender. Just like the DYI guy

I have to take my LEASED civic into the Honda dealership to have the maintenance light turned off so it is more convenient this way too.
