Tranny Swap?

I am looking to purchase a 99 lx auto trans from a friend. The car needs a new trans. Was wondering if any auto trans from 6th gens would bolt up? If not, which ones will? I'm sure some of you have done this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to come up with a rough estimate of how much this thing is gonna cost to get running. Thanks!

Re: Tranny Swap?

I believe any pre-2000 d-series trans will bolt up.

I'm not completely confident in that answer though, my knowledge of automatics trans swaps is much weaker than manual. There might be issues with the transmissions controls within the ecu.

I'd suggest a search on d-series.org

Re: Tranny Swap?

excellent! Thanks for the info. If I go to a pick a part type place for the trans, how would i be able to determine which type of engine was in the civic other than the knowing the year and trim? Is there a serial number on the actual engine block or something like that?

There will be a serial number on a plate engraved on the engine block. Aside from Em1s though, all pre-2000 civics have d-series engines, and you are very unlikely to see an em1 in a junk yard.

I was reading your sticky on engine swaps earlier and its a lot of really good info. Thank you. Just so I'm clear though, are you saying that all D series engines will bolt right into this 99 lx? Also, you seem to know a lot about this and I was wondering if you had a ballpark figure on cost of parts for a new motor and trans on one of these things? My buddy and I will be doing all the labor...thanks again!

Re: Tranny Swap?

I think this conversation is changing a bit, at first it seemed as if you were just looking to swap the transmission, now your looking to do a complete engine swap.

When doing an engine swap the engine needs to be of equal or lesser age than the chassis, in your circumstances that means you can take then engine out of a 99-00 civic. Without spending a ton of money you have two engine options, the d16y7, which is the current stock engine, or a d16y8. The d16y8 is an ex/CDM si engine, it has a bit more power due to a different head, larger injectors and etcetera.

To swap the d16y7 all you would need to do is pull the engine out and drop it back in, relatively simple. Swapping in the d1678 would require some minor changes, still relatively simple though; you need to change the ecu, wire in the vtec solenoid, knock sensor, iacv.

Approximate cost:
d16y7 w/ an auto trans... $500-600
D16y8 w/ an auto trans... $800-1000

With either swap you should very seriously consider changing all serviceable belts, hoses, timing belt tensioner, water pump and valve cover gasket. That would be an additional $200-300.
