Rep Power: 163 Anyone try installing a bigger battery on stock tray?
Our cars take group 51R. Does anyone know of someone that has tried to use say a group 34 battery in the stock tray and what modifications were necessary for it to fit?
I'm happy with the stock size, 500CCA is good and I hesitate to upgrade because of increased weight. But the internal resistance does cause a voltage drop if you try to run any large loads on the battery (engine not running). Costco Kirkland/Johnson Controls, lifetime warranty if you swap it every <2.9999999years.
I don't think there's an Odyssey deep cycle battery for that group size but there is an Optima Yellowtop but they suck (made in Mexico and only 450CCA).
With group 34 you can get an Odyssey with 880CCA!
It's not any taller than 51R, just a bit fatter and longer
Not necessary at all for my setup but curious if people have done it. Seems like there is a bit of room between the fuse box and fuel filter (length) and a bit of room with the depth. Would have to trim rim of tray so battery sits as low as stock.
I feel sorry for the people with Honda Fits and Civic Hybrids that use a group 151r, only 335CCA. Luckily people have modded the Fit easily enough to use 51/51R.

EDIT: and if your looking to do it in a '99 Civic then not sure... 6th gen vs 7th gen different battery location.
