Exhaust rattle caused by failing water pump bearings?

A new catalytic converter was installed last year. A few weeks or months later, something started rattling under the car. It sounds like the exhaust. I took it into my mechanic and he insists that it can't be a problem with the exhaust, and that the problem must be in the engine. He listened to the engine and thinks the water pump bearing may be starting to fail. At this point there's no obvious noise coming from it.

So what's the chance of a seemingly-OK water pump causing the exhaust to rattle?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Crawl under it yourself and find the noise?

Second opinions can be valuable.
