99 Civic Ex - Car Will Not Start, Transmission stuck.
99 Civic Ex - Car Will Not Start, Transmission stuck.
Car dies all of a sudden when I pull in to park on the street halfway. Engine sputters and dashboard will not light up as I try to restart. Transmission is stuck at P when I try to shift to neutral to steer/move the car.
About 135K miles. Had a head gasket and distributor replacement 18 months ago. No symptoms leading up to the sudden breakdown.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Is the starter motor trying to crank motor? Could it be your cables to the battery are corroded or the battery is dead? When battery is dead, the shifter will not move since the park lock on the shifter is a electrical part on it under the shifter cover. There is usually a little cover or slot to slide a key or such to hold it in so the shifter can be moved and or the car can be towed.

and dashboard will not light up as I try to restart.
You can usually get the dash lights to flicker on and off as you slowly twist the ignition key, that's bad spots in the switch contacts.
There was a recall on those switches. See your Honda dealer if you think this could be your problem.
(Of course it's not the only possible cause of this, but it's a common one.)
NOTE: Even if the recall was already completed on your car long ago, it can still need replaced again. IMO the dealer should still cover the repair under the recall again. We have done this many times where I work without a problem.
