You can probablty tap it out. That's a pretty easy area to work with lots of room. If you absolutely can't keep it out you will have to use the high heat silicone (should be blue) to keep the oil in tere. By cap I'm guessing you mean valve cover.

Is the bolt sticking out anywhere? Or is it totally recessed into the head?

There are tons of ways to get it out though:

Or, if you do this all the time:

Removing a broken screw, stud, or bolt can be simple - or not.

It all depends on how much access you have to what's broken.

If it is a valve cover on a 4-cylinder, it probably won't be too miserable.

When it is broken off flush, like you say yours is, you can usually drill the center of the broken screw, then use a screw extractor to turn it out. Be very careful with the screw extractor. They are very brittle and they snap easily. If you break the screw extracor off in the screw, you have a much bigger problem as they are very hard and nearly impossible to drill out.

I recently had a similar situation with a distributor cap screw. It was small enough that I didn't trust trying a screw extractor, so I drilled several successfully larger holes through the broken screw, then used a tap to cut new threads.

On a positive note, one broken screw on a valve cover may not even leak, and if it does, it can likely be remedied with a little extra silicone gasket sealer. Valve covers do not need to be very tight. In fact, if they are overtightened, they tend to squeeze out the gasket and leak. Check the torque spec. in your manual, but it will be listed in in-lbs. rather than ft-lbs.

One of the neatest tricks I have seen to remove a broken stud (steel stud in aluminum head) was done when a machinist took a nut, then tig welded it to the top of the broken stud, and screwed it out with a wrench. It turned a major machine shop job into a 5 minute fix.
