im working on my mother in laws civic and all of her dash gauges have no power... i started by checking the fuses and obviously it was blown... changed it and it blew again when key was turned on... so my first thought was a short... took my test light and the top pin of the fuse is hot when key is on.. good... took my multimeter and tested the continuety of the bottom pin and a ground and sure enough its grounded... stays grounded when i shake all the wires from the fuse box and the two plugs on top of the cluster... i pulled out the interior fuse box and found 2 pins that have continuety with the bottom pin of the #10 (meter) fuse slot which should send power to the cluster... my thought is that i should only have one with continuety not two...i then matched up the plug that goes to the space where the pins had continuety and tested to the cluster end of the harness and it seems good... i see that the fuse boxes or the panels inside go bad often... is this what i am looking at?

does anyone have a schematic on the gauge cluster? a diagram that shows where each wire goes and what it does?

civic is a 2001 4 door 4cyl stick shift...

Yeah, you may need a real wiring diagram, along with fusebox diagrams.. Sorry, I can't hotlink the factory info I use.
Try a library, I hear some have subscriptions to Alldata or Mitchell.



More than just the cluster uses that fuse.
Here is a shopping list of stuff attached to THAT fuse:

A/T reverse relay, Back-up light switch (M/T), CarLink interface
box (CarLink), Gauge assembly, Keyless receiver unit (EX;
’04-’05: DX, LX), Multiplex control unit, Security control unit, Shift
lock solenoid (A/T)

Fusebox connectors/terminals for those are D11, K6, K7, R5, all are solid yellow wire.



Pull the cluster out. Disconnect it. See if the fuse still blows. That would give direction, you would know if the problem is really inside the cluster or not.

My guess: it won't be in the cluster. Look for evidence of human tampering.

the car belongs to my in laws... so i dont have it on hand all the time... now with the battery hooked up the brake lights are always on to me it sounds like an electrical issue still, and all i have read still points to that fuse panel... i found a used one on ebay...
my car is an EX 2001 4 door manual shift power locks and windows
the box on ebay is EX 2001 4 dr manual shift vtec
would the vtec make a difference?

Both cars have VTEC, so you should be fine in that regard

Did you try it with cluster disconnected as suggested ??

Do you mean the rear brake lights are on...? or the !Brake indicator in the cluster is on ?

no i havent tried that yet...
i just mess with it in my spare time while i am over there at their house...
but yes the brake lights stay on all the time...
they tried to replacing the switch on the pedal unsuccessfully

Take a look at the brake pedals metal arm in the area where it meets the brake switch plunger... There is a hole in the arm and it has a plastic clip/pin inserted into the hole. If the plastic is missing it never pushes the plunger to open the switch contacts.

I will do some checking on items protected by the meter fuse for you when I can get to my 7th gen info.

I had that happen on a lady friends car... I JB Welded a penny in place or something

^^^ All the Hondas seem to have the plastic pin being used in them...

Not sure of the reason they use it though.

the o8 Fit i worked on today had several fits. lost power steering and instrument cluster among other options. found a blown fuse at IG METER . Well i found the unexpected. after looking the vehicle over from top to bottom i saw something out of place. the shield covering the cat converter rotted off and wedged itself between the floorboard and the o2 sensor. the shield chafed the heater power wire for sensor and grounded itself to the cat. well easy peasy from there. CRAZY.
