Rep Power: 0 Illumination for buttons on 2002 Honda Civic EX sedan
Hello all,
I have a 2002 Honda Civic EX Sedan.
Can someone please tell me if these buttons are supposed to be illuminated when the taillights and/or headlights are on?
* Recirculation mode button
* A/C button
* Rear defroster button
The lights that indicate whether these functions are on *do* work, but I'm specifically wondering whether all the buttons are supposed to be backlit when the taillights and/or headlights are on.
Currently in my car only the rear defroster button is backlit but the recirculation mode and a/c button are not.
thank you in advance,
Lorenzo

Did you recently mess with your console? When I took mine apart to put in my headunit, the backlight on those stopped working but the function buttons continued to work. Might be related.

prolly burnt bulbs. there are two bulbs for those three buttons (special size twist socket you need from dealer).

take your car to the dealer. there was a recall on a multiplex control unit or something for my 01. they said it could cause dash lights to stop working. if it's a light follow the steps you would to remove your cd player and then you can access those buttons from the rear.
also. are those buttons pressed when your driving at night?

Inifiniteblur: I couldn't find a recall issue related to this. As for whether the buttons are on at night, yes, the indicator lights do work for all three buttons when I have those functions on.
gearbox: I'll look into whether it's really a burned bulb issue, but Milky has a point...
Milky: It's interesting that you had a experience with the backlights not working when you changed your headunit. I *just* changed my headunit when I noticed that the backlights weren't working, but I cannot confirm that the backlights weren't working *before* I changed the headunit. Milky, can you explain what you did to get your backlights to work again?
Mindbomber: thanks for confirming that all 3 buttons should be backlit!

wait are all of your backlights off? the first post made it sound like only the buttons werent working. and you say the defrost light is on. that makes me 100% sure its a bulb, because the defrost icon has its own bulb, and the ac/recirc share a second bulb. i would still replace both bulbs tho since you have it all taken out and the second one will likely burn out soon.

kinda off topic, but can you get those bulbs for the climate control in blue? or is it the film that makes it red? i hate the red.

bulbs are clear, film is either green or red depending on the car. you can peel the films off the dials and buttons and have clear light, or do yellow/orange/green film and still have it be decently bright. blue and purple film prolly wont work since filament bulbs put out most of their light in the higher wavelengths like red and orange. you have to use leds for lower wavelength colors, and ofcourse the films need to be removed or hardly any light will come out.

Not kidding here, the same thing happened to me after my HU install. Mine still "go out" occasionally...all i do to make them illuminate again is pound the bottom center of the console and they light up again haha ghetto i know but maybe it'll work for you!

Just to add some updated info, instead of getting mugged at the dealer for OEM bulbs, for these two bulbs you can also get a working replacement from Radio Shack.
Radio Shack 12V Microlamps 2-Pack (Model #272-1092)
They are $1.99 for two bulbs. They are a smidge shorter than the factory bulb, but still fit into the plastic holder without problem. Just remove the old bulb, slide the two wires through, pull them into the same groove where the factory bulb went, trim the lead and you are set.

superbrightleds.com is also a good source for cheap LED stuff. I ordered some parts for making a custom tail section on my motorcycle last year. They have premade bulbs and pretty much all the parts to make any setup you want.
