anybody have a 15 inch subwoofer?

i was thinking about purchasing a single 15 inch subwoofer in my car. I was wondering if anybody has a single 15 inch. If so than how does it sound? Should i purchase the single 15 or go with two 10 inch subs.

If you can find one, I used to have a Soundstream SPL 170. Absolutely sick woofer, will eat as much power as you want to give it. They dont make them anymore but Im sure some people have some floating around unused. If youre looking for output, it can be achieved without getting a single 15. Look into dual 10s, 12s or purchase my Alpine Type-X 12" in ported enclosure

I just installed two 10's Infinity Perfect VQ for my boy. Sounds clean, but not as loud as you could want it. Two 12's are perfect for both quality and loudness. I have a 15" comp VR right now powered by Kicker Kx1200.1 amp. Been in my car for 2 years now. It's loud as a mother! The only drawback is that the quality is not as good as two 12's.

What are you going for anyways? SQ or SPL?

10s are cleaner and will be more diverse for different genres of music.
A 15 will hit harder and looser. Rap is good or a 15 for the long sustained bass notes. But or rock and anything else, Id go wih 10s.

it all depends on what u listen to
10's=listening to alot of rock
12's=listening to rock rb basically the all around
15's=listening to all mrb and rap
this is cause the 10s hit the beats quick in the rock but the 15 goes slower but deeper my brother has a 15 but he doesnt even use it anymore cause he drives a mitsubishi 3000gt so to have it in he has to put down the back seat ITS THAT BIG!!! but its all about what music u listen to cause he had 2 10's but he didnt like it cause all he did was listen to rap and rb so he got the 15 but it dosent matter now cause he moved to italy for a a year so his cars mine I GET TWO CARS!!! yeah me

Yeah a 15" is good for rap/R&B/Techno. But you gotta do a lot of work to make it sound good...and i mean A LOT of work. My 15" costs $150 bucks. I had to spend almost 2 grand to get it almost perfect or it would sound like ****. You need the right enclosure, very good amp, decent HU, good power supply, a lot of dynamat, and wiring it correctly. To tweek it out, you'd also need a crossover and equalizer. Yeah running a 15" aint no joke.

theirs more than just size factor to determine how loud/spl/sq wise a subwoofer will get. its generally 80% install dependent and 20% equipment.

i heard 2 12" setups that "sounded" like a single 10" to my ears and single 15" that "sounded" like 3 12"s. you need to figure out how much space your working with and how much power you'll be pushing to your subs.

with a 15" kicker comp vr, i think its a good starter sub for someone whose seeking spl/loud.

15" in a ported box is perfect. Make sure the box is at least 3 cubic feet. And whoever is making the box, make sure it fits in the trunk...and say goodbye to all of your trunk space. Access to the spare tire will be very limited.
Now on to the amp. What have you had in mind?

Thats the way to go, or you could even do 1 10! it sounds freaking sick! although i might go with a w6 because the w7 is like having a ferrari for an everyday drive. your just not going to use its full potential. Just make sure you do it in a ported box! its way sicker!

whoever thinks 15's can't sound good or play rock or anything tight hasn't heard a proper 15. and no it doesnt costs thousands, and no it doesnt require a lot of work. just a little bit of time and effort.

for the amp i was thinking about the alpine v power MRP-F450 in mind:
600W peak power @ 4 ohms, bridged
400W RMS (continuous) x 1 @ 2 ohms, 14.4V, 20Hz - 20kHz, 1% THD
220W RMS (continuous) x 1 @ 4 ohms, 14.4V, 20Hz - 20kHz, 1% THD
what you guys think about that

nice amp, but doesnt a 15 need more than 400rms?

make sure u power it well.

and u can prolly find decent amps cheaper than alpine that sound fine on subs..

First of all, No, 15's don't necessarily need 400+ watts, (most of power handling/requirements are based on the motor structure/voice coil configurations)

Second of all, the alpine MRP-F450 is a 4 channel amp that is bridgeable, which WILL work for a single subwoofer, but is not really designed to do so. you may want to look at a monoblock amp (stable to at least 2 ohm mono) or a two channel amp that is stable bridged to 4 ohm. ( the alpine mrp-m450 may work for ya if you are looking for alpine)

and i do agree with ludlam that a 15 can sound awesome, given the correct power and installation (heck, a guy that comes up to my shop every now and again has 2 18" s in his extended cab ram that sound sick and play VERY tight and accurate. They are in separate 3 cubic foot sealed boxes hitting right into the backs of the seats, with a LARGE orion amp on them.)

of course i meant in general, I wouldnt want a 15 that was under 400. I might not listen to it that loud but I'd want the power..

I wouldnt go with a 15" period. U can get great bass from a 12 and better SQ. U could get a W7 or Type X or some other type of good high power sub.

Ill tell you what, 2 powerful 10" subs are the best combination of punch and precision, for most applications.

I have 2 10s in a ported box (All by JL, including box) and I was listening to some music earlier. Here is how it sounds: Sharper than a razor blade, but I still feel like my head was in a paint shaker (literally) when I have it all the way up.
Check my trunk DIY link in my sig for pics. Its an amazing setup.
