Ya know, one thing I can't stand is when people use the peak amp rating to tell you how many watts an amp is. I had a friend tell me that he has a "600w amp". I looked at it, and it's a Jensen 75x4. I'm assuming that since it says 600w on it, that it's 150x4 Peak...which when added up would be 600. I just think it's dumb. I have an Optimus 65x4 (RMS) powering my Infinity's...which would be 260w or 520w Peak. I don't tell people I have a 520w amp powering my speakers, though, because I think that sounds totally retarded. I tell 'em it's a 65x4. Another example is my sub amp. It's 300 RMS @ 2-ohms and, I do believe, 450 Peak @ 2-ohms. As you can see, that amp is more than enough for my XLC's which are 200 RMS, 400 Peak. It's funny, though, because when I tell my friends that I have a 300w amp, they say "Is that all? I have an 800w amp!", or something similar. The 800w amp is an actual example as well. It was actually 100x4 RMS or 200x4 Peak. 200 x 4 = 800, so that's where they got that. I'm sorry if this post annoys anybody or anything...it's just that I hear and see that crap all the time, and it's driving me nuts. I just had to vent.

It is ghay. Also if they aren't running into a 2ohm load, they are getting peak of half what they say. For instance I have a '680W' peak amp. It runs 300X2 at 2ohms, but I have two subs so I am only getting 150X2...more than enough for 10"s though I'm sure some would disagree[IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/IMG] Not to mention the fact that if the amp is Profile, Jensen, etc. He's probably getting far less than 75X4...more like 30X4.

this is what amps usually go by... i'm not exactly sure why but it is... maybe it has to do with the ohms, cause some could bump at 1 ohm n some at only at 4. it would be harder to compare the 1 ohm amp with the 4 ohm amp. but ya 95% of the time people will tell you the peak performance. n 99% of the companies that make amps use it too(maybe it tricks people into buying it). for example, sony xplod. or my cheap a$$ dhd amp. they all say the peak, not the RMS.

You see? That's why I like my Clarion ProAudio sub amp. It's 200 RMS @ 4-oms and 300 RMS @ 2-ohms. Right on the front of the amp, it says 200w. It's hard to see...but you see 200w in the big grey rectangle.

clarion makes amps? probably sucks, maybe thats why.. but then sony n dhd sucks to so... wonder what mohawks input on this is... oh n mohawk, what are some good companies that make amps? i know phoenix gold and ppi are.. any others?

Dude, wtf? This amp POUNDS. Btw, notice that it is a Clarion ProAudio!! It's a good amp. I have my two XLC's on it...the gain is only half way up (and my CD player only has 2.2v pre-outs)...and these subs are at xmax. This amp could easily power two 12" Punch HX2's. Those subs are 250w RMS per coil, and my amp is 300w RMS @ 2-ohms. I seriously doubt that it would have any problem at all with those subs.

hx2's are 250 RMS per voice coil. so that would make it 500 RMS. how many watts are xlc's? i couldn't find any info on them. you said they were made by fosgate right?

Companies do that of course to bolster their amps and make uneducated newbies buy them. Just like how HU's are rated in Peak watts to sound like it's a bigger number. When in reality, most HU's put out only 19Watts RMS at pretty high distortion. It's called marketing [IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/IMG]

well said. do some research before you buy your stuff. someone asked about good amp companies. Alpine, JBL, RF, Soundstream, just to name a few. I personally prefer Alpine v12 Series amps. those are bad to the bone.

Umm...my Punch XLC's are 200 RMS, 400 Peak. I think I mentioned that before. Also, as for the 500 RMS on the HX2's...you go by the RMS per coil. The total RMS doesn't matter when you're picking an amp, because a DVC sub works like having two single coil subs in one. Another example is the MTX RFL152. It's rating is 2,000 RMS and 4,000 peak. Well, that's actually 1,000 RMS per coil and 2,000 Peak per coil. That means that an amp like the JBL BP600.1 could easily power an RFL. This particular amp puts out 1200 RMS at 1-ohm. Since the RFL has dual 2-ohm coils, all you would have to do is wire the two coils in series to the amp to get a 1-ohm load.

there are plenty of good amp companies like xtant, kicker, mcintosh, jl audio, crossfire, memphis, zapco, jbl, mtx, its a matter of personal taste and how much you want to spend.

and neonnights......your wrong on the power output of that jbl amp. that model only puts out a little over 600 watts at 1 ohm while the JBL BP1200.1 pushes out close to 1400 watts at 1 ohm. i think thats the amp you were think of, am I correct?

Umm...no, you aren't correct about me thinking of the BP1200.1...and no, I'm not wrong about the power output. The BP600.1 is 600 RMS at 2-ohms...if you don't believe me, go here: JBL BP600.1 [IMG]i/expressions/moon.gif[/IMG] Also, the power output for these amps doubles every time you drop the ohms. At 4-ohms the BP600.1 puts out 300RMS; at 2-ohms it's 600RMS; at 1-ohm it's 1200RMS. Also, the BP1200.1 is 600RMS at 4-ohms, 1200RMS at 2-ohms, and 2400RMS at 1-ohm. [IMG]i/expressions/moon.gif[/IMG]
