The thread to end all sound prooofing questons!!!

I am a complete an absolute idiot.. even after pming mowhawk 5 times I'm still aprehensive as two what to apply raam mat on...

What I am trying to do is make a d.y.i so morons like me never have to bug you guys again....
In this thread I am posting pics of the trunk cargo area... trunk lid... an doors..
you masters of sound have other vital places for proofing post pics as well...
Someoone please take these pics an highlight the areas for raamat application for the most effiecent use of sound dampening without adding to much unwanted weight...

I will then go in edit the thread with the new pics an an turn it into a dyi for soundproofing your car

Note also state what not to do if you have sideairbags.. thank you

Highlight the areas that need it most.. state number of layers, things to watch out for... an pics of other important places I may have missed.. an I will complie it all into a usefull dyi for the site to use ... again thank you to those who choose to help

Here is a picture of where I put Brown Bread on my front door (sedan). I did a double layer here, although it still looks sparse.

I didn't cover over the big holes, but I heard you probably could. I'm not sure how well it'll hold up since it would not be adhering to anything.

Make sure you only sound deaden under where the plastic panel is. I made the mistake of going beyond the boundaries of the panel (near latch mechanism) and when I put the panel back on, you could see the Brown Bread! I then had to remove the panel again and remove that bit of Brown Bread that was stick up from underneath! And it is HARD to remove!

Also keep track of where those tab holes are for attaching stuff back on, if you cover it with your sound deadener, you won't be able to get the panel back on.

Heat gun and roller are a good idea too.

I've only done the four doors of my sedan.

Hey Grifter... Check out the pics of my system, I did an overkill job with deadening the trunk in my 1.7EL. I pretty much covered every square inch of the trunk with the stuff. Also used that expanding foam stuff in the trunk lid, and wedged shims between mating metal panels. After eight hours of work in brutal heat my trunk is now unbelievably rattle free... Next up I'm doing the doors!

I only covered the perforated inner layer that you see in the picture. The reason I didn't go and do the inside layer of the outer skin is because:

1) It's sort of hard to get under there
2) I have rustproofing and so they sprayed a layer of oily orange-like color rustproofing stuff there, which would have to be cleaned up if I wanted my sound deadener to adhere. If you don't have rustproofing, I'm sure it could be done.

thw inside of the door should be deadened as well if possible..this cuts down on alot of midbass resonances an road noise... ..it's a bugger to get to and expect a slice or 2..but it's worth it

What about the floor of the car? an this sounds dumb.. but what is the firewall? the place by the pedals?

will those places cut out road an engine noise or are they a waste of time?

Firewall is the wall between the cabin and the engine bay (behind and under the dash). I think doing the firewall will be pretty hard, do you have to take out dash pieces? But it will cut out some engine noise.

To apply sound deadening to the floor or firewall, you will first have to remove the stock rubber mat that Honda puts there. Mohawk said it is attached pretty well and will require a bit of work to get it up and then a bit of work to clean the residue up from the adhesive. The doors and trunk are going to be the easiest to do. I would say just doing the doors is going to make a big difference. I still have 140 sq. feet sitting in my room, waiting to be applied. I am going to be taking lots of pictures when I finally decide to install it.

try playing test tones, seeing where it rattles, and putting lots of crap down on it. do your license plate for sure. some stuff is really tough to fix (exhaust) just a warning. all you can really do is try to keep the sound in your car with fatmat, dynamat, etc.
