Need advice on amplifier purchase!!!

Hello all,

I have a question for all you car audio experts out there. I just bought a 2010 Honda Civic Sport sedan and I want to upgrade the speaker system. I'm planning on buying Alpine SPR-17C (6 1/2" Type Rs) for the front speakers and I plan on leaving the factory back speakers and tweeters at the front of the dash near the windshield alone. I also have an eXtreme subwoofer, not sure of the specs of it, but it's a 10", already in an enclosure, and it's not a high quality one. My question is this: What kind of amp would I need to power the subwoofer and my Alpines? That is, I only want the amp to power the subwoofer and the two front speakers, not the rear speakers. I have a good size budget for this, but I also don't want to overdo it, so basically, as long as the speakers have a good punch and good clarity, and have enough power so they won't distort at high volumes, I'll be happy. However, I do listen to my speakers at very high volumes sometimes.

Also, I have a two channel eXtreme amp that I was using to power the sub before, but I'm assuming I'd be better off just selling it and getting a four channel amp instead, which is fine. If I forgot to mention anything, let me know and I'll clarify immediately. Thanks in advance!

Re: Need advice on amplifier purchase!!!

I'm going to ask what anyone is going to ask first. Whats the RMS on the sub (Edit: sorry, i didnt read your post right, but whats the rms on your old amp you were powering it with?)? You could try looking around for a 3 chan amp (which are hard to find, but kicker makes a zx550.3, which might be good). I'm not a super audio person, so I don't know any of the non-mainstream brands, but I would go with a JL or Alpine amp, as I've never really heard anything bad about them. Also, are you going to run new wires to the front? If you look around you can tell I'm trying to put some front speakers in my '99, but I'm afraid to push 75W rms through the stock wires.

Re: Need advice on amplifier purchase!!!

You really need the specs of the sub to determine what kind of amp would be good for it

I would opt for a 4 channel amp, and bridge 2 channels for sub, and 2 for the speakers, however, your sub will most likely be underpowered

That doesnt tell us anything lol

We need the specs of the sub, in RMS too, not peak power

And I'm assuming the info is only on the base of the sub, obscured by it's enclosure. So my only option is to break the enclosure to look at the sub. I'm better off just sticking with my amp and getting a separate one for the speakers I guess.

Ummmmmmmmm, why do you need to break apart the box? Isn't it just screwed in?
