Tire Replacement

I drive a 2014 Honda Civic sedan purchased new from dealer in 2014 with OEM factory type tires (Affinity). Currently approaching 50 km on them. What is considered good for mileage on this type tire, not sure if the time is approaching to get a new set. As per the image I googled is this a decent way to determine tie condition.

"Look for the tread wear bars. These are the small strips of rubber connecting individual treads, shown circled in the first photo. On a new tire, these will be deeply inset below the surface of the tread. As the tread wears away, the wear bar will appear closer to the surface. If the wear bar is level with the rest of the tread, that tire is dangerously worn out and should be replaced ASAP. You can also use the penny test, shown in the second photo: take a penny and insert it upside down into one of the grooves in the tire. If you can still see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to get new tires." Comments most welcome.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: Tire Replacement

Original tire life can be rather short, depending on many factors. I figure somewhere between 25 and 40k miles (40k-65k KMs) the majority need replaced.

There are many tire choices, best to check tire dealer websites (tirerack.com is one in US) and pick your size needed, check many brands, check expected tread life, read reviews

The law states to replace the tires when the wear bars show, but traction can suffer in adverse weather conditions long before your tread becomes as thin as the law allows.......so you should probably determine your need for tire replacements using tread depth measurements coupled with some common sense about current and upcoming driving and road conditions.

Some people who drive very little may find weather cracking of the rubber to be a factor as the tires age.

3/32" tread depth might be technically legal, but during rainy weather hydroplaning can become a very real and extremely dangerous possibility.

3/32" tread depth might be technically legal, but if it snows you might end up stuck in the middle of a perfectly flat road on an inch of snow while traffic piles up behind you.

Are you in an area that requires snow tires for winter?
