2009 EX-L Low speed thunk/clunk noise in tight turns

I've been searching for a while and coming up empty, so posting a new thread. Trying to troubleshoot a noise coming from the front end of my wife's 2009 EX sedan during tight, low speed turns.

It manifests most often when backing out of the driveway or a parking spot. Usually happens after backing up and turning the steering wheel to the stops (or nearly so). Start slowly moving forward and spin the wheel the other way, and you'll get a pretty loud 'CLUNK' from the front end. I don't feel anything in the steering wheel when it happens. Just the noise. I can't tell that it's coming from one side or the other. Frankly, sounds like it's right in the middle...

Suspension, ball joints, etc all check out. Everthing feels tight. Not sure what else it could be. Advice appreciated. (are you out there ezone? )

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Don't do that to me, I don't always read all the posts.

I'll guess first:
Loosen and retorque the steering rack mounting bolts.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Loosen all six of the the steering gearbox mounting
bolts several turns.
3. Torque all of the mounting bolts half-tight, then
torque all of them fully.
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Test-drive the vehicle, turning left and right at slow
speeds, to make sure the noise is gone.

Bolts #15 (43 ft lb), #17 (28 ft lb), and 2 more that are on the little brackets (B48) that the #15s go through (40 ft lb).

Perfect! I'll give this a try. Thanks a lot for the link and diagram.

I thought I'd read something about this noise before on the forum, and really did try to find it by searching. Found a few threads on the bump stops (including the one you linked in your response). We aren't hearing any noises over bumps tho. It's pretty quiet in straight-line driving, even on our crappy roads.

Huge help. Thanks.
