What causes a battery to reverse polarity?

So I bought a 12v 5 Ah SLA battery on Amazon so I have a portable power source for testing electrical parts in junkyards and such. However, when I tried to charge it, I got a reverse polarity error on my charger. I verified with a voltmeter, this battery does indeed have reverse polarity. So my question is what would cause this? Was it likely mislabeled, or is it possible that it was charged backwards at the factory? Sorry for the dumb question, I'm just extremely curious what would cause this.

Mislabeled, you can't charge a battery backwards

You have positive ground cars?
Don't they still use a normal battery?
We still use normal batteries for positive ground off-grid systems

Yes I'm sure I bought the right one. Also, wouldn't a positive ground car still use a normal battery?

Yes

What causes a battery to reverse polarity? So I bought a 12v 5 Ah SLA battery on Amazon
Send it back, get another one.

Check that one before install.

FWIW a lead acid battery can be charged up backwards. I've witnessed it.

Interesting. What happens when a lead acid battery is charged backwards?

Same but not the same.
When done to a typical automotive lead-acid battery it's horribly inefficient, not very powerful, and should have a very short life.

In the off-grid world they tend to go boom

where usually is the positive, it's negative. just different sides of the battery.

So the chassis is the ground and the positive terminal connects to it?

Maybe pulling that trailer that weighed more than 2500 pounds over 500 miles a year ago has something to do with the failure?

Another question- Since 2nd gear is the only gear that works, my speed is obviously limited. What's the maximum safe constant RPM to run at in 2nd gear? Thanks.

Anywhere between idle and redine.

You can run it at redline all day long!

Got oil? Coolant? Fans?
Maybe you should abort the car ride and replace the trans, or something.

Realistically, what would be a safe cruising RPM?

Re: I think this is the end of my transmission

at 4,000prm with your explosive refrigerant the AC is probably amazing

realistically, i have a friend that had a cavalier with only first and second gear. the only real problem with driving it like that is 50mph at 4000+ rpm is it is very loud and very embarrassing. he used to get up to speed and put it in neutral. i'm pretty sure the embarrassing car cost him his girlfriend
