De-restricting a d16a

Hi iv have just recently bought my civic coupe d16a and it seems to be restricted to 4/5 rpm in 1st to 3rd gears. Iv had a jap import before and know they are restricted in those gears but am unsure of how to de-restrict it on one of these. Could someone please help me? Thanks.

Ok.

I doubt that. Seriously.

I bet the cat is clogged. Drop the exhaust and test drive it.

Hi, i meant that iv had jap import car before not one of these, i had a glanza v and it was restricted on the revs and didnt boost until i had it removed.

The civic revs ok in 1st but in 2nd only revs to 5500 rpm. And round about the same in 3rd :/ i thought with it being an import it might have a restrictor onit. So u think it may be the cat?

What country are you in?

USA only gets a rev limiter at redline when in gear. (I'd have to do some research to figure out if it should be lowered in neutral with a manual trans, I can't remember.)
If it has VTEC code set, it may limit RPM too. If it has VTEC.

If you can't reach redline @ WOT in gear -- but it will rev higher by backing off the throttle a little, then clogged exhaust is my first thought. Usual suspect would be the cat here.

I might think differently if I was to actually experience what you are trying to explain though.

HTH

Re: De-restricting a d16a

in a honda, there *might* be restriction if it is not in gear. our computers are not smart enough to change limiters by gears, not even think it is necessary. If you talking about a turbo, it might have been the case in that glanza something you are mentioning (no idea what that car is, though, so like mentioned above, which country are you from?)

Re: De-restricting a d16a

Im from the uk. Yeah my glanza that i had was a 1.3 turbo and i knew alot about it, but like i said im new with honda this is my first one. I just thought with it being a jap import it may be restricted like my glanza was. When in neutral it doesnt redline either but u say thats normal for a honda?

I will try letting off the throttle a little and then putting back on and see if that makes a difference and if it does like u say it will probs be the cat thats clogged.

Its the single vtec. Not actually classed as a vtec i dont think but myaswell be as the valve opening does the same thing.

Re: De-restricting a d16a

in neutral, would just shoot beyond the redline, limiter or not, so i *think* it limits how high it can go. (no load, so engine will freely move)

Re: De-restricting a d16a

I know most of Hondas later automatic trans cars have a lower rev limit when in neutral or park than they do when in a gear.
I wasn't sure if a manual trans car uses similar strategies.

I have no clue if any of this would apply outside of North American markets, but I'd expect it would.
