Rep Power: 0 'Neighborhood Find' - 1990 Civic 4dr Dx
Hi - new guy to forum near Baltimore! Just bought at 1990 Civic 4dr DX, auto, 122K - cold air - runs good - good condition.
-Any specific maintenance issues with the motor or trans - quirks - weak points - etc. I should be aware of that are now known from 20+ years of road service?
I paid $1500.
I bought the car as an old model basic, reliable utilitarian commuter - which is what I really like to drive.
Any input greatly appreciated!!!
Mike

Hey Mike
Congrats on your purchase. $1500 is a lot to pay for a 21 year old vehicle. I hope it needs nothing to pass safety. I purchased a 1993 Civic EX for my son a couple of months ago for $600. The previous owner was a collegue of mine who took care of anything he owned. The interior looked new except for a small rip on the side of the drivers seat. To safety it I had to change both front springs, replace one brake line and part of the fuel line. I also changed the plugs, fuel filter and air filter. I drained and replaced the transmission, brake and clutch fluid (it's a five speed). The day I was taking it in for the safety check a warning light came on indicating that I had to spend another $150 on a sensor. This may however have helped it pass the Ontario emmissions test. The car had better readings now than it did in 2005 when it was last tested. My only concern is the timing belt. The car has 242,000 km on it and the belt was changed at 100,000 km, but that was 12 years ago! I don't want to spend the $400 to have it changed as I cannot see the car as being worth it. I am hoping that it will last a few years until my son is out of university.
Good luck with your purchase.

Update - have put about 800 miles on the DX - the car is performing great - automatic trans occasionally shifted hard - fluid change - trans now shifts smooth - great car.
