Shifting issues at highway speed

New member and new to Civics. Got a 1998 1.6 motor , automatic with 200k. Car is in good shape, second owner and previous owner a little ol lady who used dealer maintenance. My issue I think is a performance thing but shows up like this
some days at highway speeds, it can’t decide what gear to stay in ? It shifts up, may stay there for a bit, then shifts down , then up. For no apparent reason, no change in load etc. Then the next time you drive it it’s fine ? If I shift it down manually D3 I guess it’s called again no problem. Question is there a lock- up style torque converter?
any thoughts! Weird it comes and goes.

Re: Shifting issues at highway speed

Do a single or 3x3 (googe it) ATF drain and fill.

Remove and clean the transmission shift solenoids + gasket screen with brake cleaner spray.

Inspect the shift cable unit on the transmission housing

Re: Shifting issues at highway speed

Thanks for the response. I will have to google 3x3 as you got me on that one ! Does this car use lock-up converter?
also what should I expect to see or look for when checking shift cable ?
and recommendations on what type of tranny fluid ?

Re: Shifting issues at highway speed

Drain & fill X3

Only, use Honda OEM fluid.

Thanks Craig. Just read about 3x3 on a thread. Good place to start.
