Haynes and the handbook unhelpfully just say 'Honda' coolant. Is it the normal ethelyne-glycol 2 year stuff, the 5 year organic long-life stuff, or G48 in there or does Honda have some magic ingredient?

Something like that.
The Honda coolant has the correct additives and proportions of ingrediants that match the metals that are used in their radiators.
eZone has a better explanation around here in a thread somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Conventional Ethylene Glycol
Long life
Non-Silicate and Non-Borate formula.
Hondas Type 2 coolant comes premixed 50/50 with deionized water.

Thanks. I think I found the answer for a UK alternative; Comma Xstream G30
"Ethylene glycol based antifreeze & coolant with OAT (Organic Additive Technology) inhibitors.Silicate-free"
I read also that the correct coolant is important for water pump seal life.
