Hi everyone. I'am trying to get this issue resolved but it seems to be little confusing to me. I have a 2000 honda civic DX with power steering. I started to hear a clunk nose when going over bumps or when shaking left and right the steering wheel. I have changed out the inner and outer tire rods. So far its still doing the same thing. I belive the clunking is from the rack it self as I can see the inner tie rod moving. If you watch this video you will have an idea what I am talking about.
EZone are you there? You helped me allot last time with the steering hub situation on my 01 civic
Thank you!

The clunking going over bumps could be your upper control arm bushings but not related to the play in the steering your displaying in that video. Check your lower ball joints?

I can see/feel its loose though. If I look at the inner tie rod from the driver side I see the movement almost like the rack is causing it. I know there is an adjustment guide that needs to be adjusted but not sure if this is related to clunking noise
Thank you for the response!

Had the exact same problem with my 2005 Civic. Not too knowledgeable with the 6th gens, but could be the stabilizer bar connections.
#4, #13 and #20. I changed mine and the clunking is gone!

How's your power steering fluid level?
When you are driving the car, does the power steering actually work? Does it work well, like it is supposed to? (Minus the play in the wheel)
Confirm where the noise is coming from first. Get someone to move the wheel and get in behind the intake manifold and feel if the clunking is coming from the rack itself.

Power steering work well. No leaks at all. No noise. The only thing is the clunk when moving the steering right and left. Also clunk when going over bumps. I think there is a looseness somewhere. I ordered the rack from autozone. I think its dura last brand refurbished or whatever. I will try to do my best identifying the source before opening every thing because it's pain to do so. Thanks for the reply

So last night I tried opening it and ended up stripping the power steering hard line. I was using a flare wrench though
I put it back together and I'm going to take it to a shop to get it replaced. I was getting vertigo as well looking up at the thing laying down underneath the car.
I noticed that the rack is dry ! No grease at all. Also when I opened the rack guide it was rusted. Not sure now if greasing the r ask might stop the clunking
Hope some on here can help!

Besides that, let's get our bearings on the issue....
Ok, so, tie-rods connected to either end of the rack. When you move the wheel back and fourth, does all this move as well? I know you cannot see the actual internal rack with the boots on, but do the tie rods move loosely with the steering?
OR, do the rods stay put and you see no external movement in the loose area of the steering?
Did you determine whether the knock is coming from inside the rack?
You say you have "no leaks", but I just want to confirm, IS the power steering fluid full in the reservoir? Power steering fluid can leak into the dust boots and remain there, hidden from view.
Did you push the boots back when you did the tie-rods?

I think it's the hard retun power steering line. The clunkingmovement is coming from inside the rack. Looks like the old bellows were damaged and water got inside
the rack is dry and rusty from inside. I grabbed one end of the rack while the inner tie rod disconnected with a vice grip and I can replicate the clunking. pusing inward and moving clock and counter clock produced the clunking.
The vertigo I get when working under the car is making it hard for me to do anything at this point. This is the first time I'm letting someone work on one of my cars.

Re: 2000 honda civic steering clunk
Hey man, I have the same type of play in my car. I replaced almost every front suspension part except lower control arms and the rack and pinion itself. after installing all my parts and getting an alignment, week later my steering wheel started pulling left and I got the same clunking noise as you do in the videos. my question is did you end up replacing the rack and pinion and did it make that annoying clunking noise go away???

Re: 2000 honda civic steering clunk
Oh wow. Come to find out that that the pulley was installed backwards! This led the timing belt to slip ( which is the reason I started the job). AND the tensioner spring was incorrectly installed which may have contributed to slack in the belt. Originally I had a crank no start issue. At the start of this my timing mark on the crank was out off the mark by quite a bit. So now I have a new water pump timing belt idler pulley and ac belt.

Did you ever find a solution? Same issue. Changed the motor mount, all tie rods, sway bar link & bushings, full shock assemblies, the issue remains. Just to confirm it makes the noise when turning left right while parked and also on uneven pavement. If it helps the passenger side tie rods where worn a bit but not that much. Sound is definitely center/passenger. Thanks
