I am not car inclined at all, so I apologize if I screw up some terminology. My civic (2000, LX) is coming up for a timing belt change. I have a buddy who is a mechanic, but he's typically doesn't work on Hondas.

He was listing out parts for me to get and one of those was a serpentine belt. He said to buy how many my car has. Well, popping the hood revealed three belts, but I don't know if that's all of them or if those are even all serpentine belts.

How many serpentine belts do I need for this project? Thanks in advance.

You need the 3 belts you can see (power steering, alternator, air conditioner), plus the timing belt.

The 3 belts you can see are the alternator, power steering, and air conditioning belt...

I did a part # look up for 2000 Civic LX

#1 - alternator Part# 31110P2A004
#2 - air conditioning Part # 38920P2A003
#3 - power steering Part # 56992P2A003

These 3 are all in the 15 -20 dollar range (each)

Might also add all from a Honda dealer if you are keeping car. After market is too risky on a Honda. You also should get a new waterpump and gallon of premix Honda antifreeze(it is driven by timing belt) unless ezone comes back and overrides me. (he is the expert) Some people replace the tensioner bearing for the timingbelt depending on miles on car. I didn't but I worked the rubber seal off it and inspected it and then repacked it with special silicon bearing grease for prepacked bearings.

The timing belt SHOULD be covered. You should have 4 belts, then: timing (most important), alternator (next most), power steering (#3), and air conditioning (least). The alternator should be your only serpentine belt, since it SNAKES around through different accessories.

No, not really.

Each of the 3 accessory belts are simple multi-rib belts, and each accessory belt only wraps around 2 pulleys. (2000 Civic)




The single belt drive on 2006 and newer 1.8 liter engines is considered serpentine.

based on the comments above, I shouldn't get these from Auto Parts Wharehouse website, but only the Honda parts site that was linked above? Didn't realize the difference was that substantial, thanks again.

For timing belt and critical engine components it's in your best interest to buy genuine Honda parts (from Honda). The ac,power steering, even alternator I wouldn't be so concerned with. I think you'll find the dollar difference really small on those as well so you might as well buy them from Honda too.

There are MANY dealerships that sell parts online at wholesale prices.

The estore site is an official Honda and Acura parts catalog site, but it is NOT wholesale prices.

The difference in quality is significant. Many aftermarket belts only last about half as long as OEM brands.

Don't get me started on aftermarket water pumps and pulleys....






I'd spring for Hondas Type-2 antifreeze along with the Honda brand water pump.

Check costs of shipping and taxes before you commit.

Once you find good prices online, maybe your local dealership parts department might match prices? Some will come down enough to make it worthwhile, some won't.

so I delayed this for a couple of weeks and now I have to make a road trip to Denver. That is about 700 miles or 1400 round trip.

My Civic has 90K on it now, mostly city miles since 50K - I bought it used. Can I make it to Denver and back and do this when I get back or am I taking a chance? Would I be better off renting a car just to be safe?

While I can't say for sure, I'm confident in saying it was not replaced prior to me buying the car. So, yes, possibly.

Ooo, it needed changed like 8 years ago. Due for 3rd belt now (by time).
I wouldn't even start the engine til it's replaced.

This is where I'm confused. I've read several things about the 7 year mark and the equal amount saying the deadline is 105K.
