Overheating, losing coolant... need help

I'm trying to help a friend with his 2000 Honda Civic LX he recently acquired. He recently installed a new radiator and thermostat. The car ran decent for a few weeks but now it's overheating. It appears to be venting steam out of these two... things(orange arrows). I don't know what they are. There was some speculation that these are freeze plugs? The car sat all winter with water in the radiator and very little to no coolant/anti-freeze. Anyone know what these things are called? Thanks much!

(This is not a picture of his engine, but one I found on google of a Civic. I thought this picture was of a 2000 but as I'm looking at it now it appears to be different. HOWEVER, the parts I am asking about are in the same spot and look identical to whats seen here. )

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

No,
Those arrows are pointing at shift solenoids (lock up control solenoid valves).

If those are steaming, you need to look elsewhere for the source of antifreeze..... like at the radiator hose and fitting, or at the end of the cylinder head, it could have popped the heater hose underneath the distributor.

Re: Overheating, losing coolant... need help

Upon further inspection it was determined there was in fact a leak in the end of that hose under the distributor cap. Thanks again to you both for your help.
