Hello,
Just purchased 99 Civic EX sedan 5 speed.
Odometer shows 117,988 on it.
I was gathering info on it to do a tune-up. One thing i noticed this engine doesn't have an EGR valve. I'm worried about passing emissions inspections. I looked on the block and i see "D15B".
Is this the correct engine for this car?
I just wanna get the right parts for this engine (plugs, timing belt, etc)

Re: D15B Engine
Some engines were not equipped with EGR. Look on the underhood emissions sticker, see if it lists one.

I went out and took some pics of the block and cyl head.to double check..
It just says "D15B" nothing after the "B"
Below it says 2803746.
On the cyl head above the exhaust manifold it says "P2J-6"
Also on the cyl head above the power steering pump it says "95"
Thanks for replying

Sticker on the hood says "catalyst,
TWC/HO2S(2)/EGR/SF I"
Indicates 1.6L engine.
But, that's not the original hood for this car, I think it's been a accident.
I guess that's not good news.

A 99 ex should have a d16.
I think your engine was swapped with a d15. And from the head code might be a JDM model according to this.

* could also be. D16 head on D15 block.

From whom? Car lot? Craigslist flipper?
Clean title, not salvage?
Does the VIN on the title match the VIN of the car?
Does the VIN on the dash tag match the VIN on the door jamb label?
Does the VIN of the hood match? Fenders? Doors?
A clean carfax report is worthless. A bad one is worth something.
Prepurchase inspection! (too late now)
Does the seller have to get the car to pass a smog test before the sale is final?
Post the VIN of the car, let's see if a catalog or a decoder can tell more about it.

I was looking in the USA parts catalog for 99, only noticed HX and GX as having EGR?
If that's all that is needed to pass the visual exam part of an emissions test, it seems like this would be ok.
Remove that pesky hood sticker though.....

It was a private sale thru craigslist 2 weeks ago.
The vin on the title matches the dashboard, door jam sticker, trunk lid, doors and tranny. Not the hood and driver side fender.
The title clean not a salvage one.
The inspection sticker is good, got one month left before it expires.

According to that page I might have this
"JDM
THE OBD-II 3 stage VTEC D15B 96^
(2) VTEC solenoids
Head Code "P2J"
year Code "95"
intake mani also stamped "P2J" on the back"
But, I have only one solenoid on the back left of the head, next to the throttle body.

Re: D15B Engine
It could have that engine. If it does then it would be an "illegal" swap since the engine is older then the car. If your state opens the hood and checks all that type of stuff then you might have a problem. There was also a d15 available for the 99 year so it could be that one.

I took a look at the sticker on engine computer, it said " 37820-P2P-A12 "
A look behind the intake manifold said " P2P IPT-1 " below that it shows
921 (4 or a triangle shape)

I seen this mounting boss behind the intake manifold below the throttle body.
I wonder what i'm missing there.

You do realize the engines are used worldwide, in different vehicles, and probably even used for applications that don't even involve cars, right?
There could be holes drilled and bosses cast in to cover a ton of different possible applications.

Re: D15B Engine
Better see if bolts can still thread into those holes then, they look like they might be boogered up.

Another question for you guys, if you don't mind.
I think I need to set the valve adjustment, do I use the spec on the hood sticker for the 1.6L engine to set the valves on engine in there now, D15B block/P2J-6 head?

Re: D15B Engine
Scrape that hood sticker off before someone takes it seriously LOL.
You need the valve adjustment specs that go with that cylinder head and cam.

Re: D15B Engine
Loose valves make noise (meaning TOO loose)
Tight valves burn.
I prefer to run them loose.....Because on most Hondas, they typically tighten up over time. Plus, tight valves can cause rich codes.
