98 civic lx auto wont go into park

i tried parking my car today and the shift lever went into park but on the dash it still said it was in drive and i could not remove my key? anyone know what this could be i had to move the lever alot before it would recognize it was in park and allow me to shut off the car?

Other thoughts, if that wasn't it:
Is the lever really difficult to move? The cable could be binding, or the pivot on the trans where the cable end attaches could be corroded and seized. (I have been seeing this on CVTs a lot.)
Or bound up in the shifter area.
The set of switches for the lights is attached to the side of the shifter.
If the switch set is bad or out of adjustment, it would keep the key from releasing. The system must see the "P" contacts closed (P light lit) before it will release the ignition.
Cable adjustments first, as per that bulletin above.

that seems to be what its doing. i had to shake the lever around while it was in park for it to recognize it and let me remove the key. ill check this out later today when i get time to rip it apart. thanks
