My transmission has always kind of acted like it has 5 gears.

When I'm accelerating lightly,
1st gear is from 0-5MPH
2nd gear is from 5-22MPH
3rd gear is 22-31MPH
4th gear is 31-?
soft lock-up @ 40MPH
5th gear/hard lock-up is 52-maxMPH

I don't have a tach. but I go by ear. Basically when it switch to 4th at 31MPH, the engine is at around 2000RPM, it starts rising a bit and then when I hit 40MPH, it feels like the engine has a direct connection to the wheels (lock-up) and the engine drops RPMs a bit. Then from 40-52MPH, the RPMs rise, and then at 52MPH you can feel the transmission lock up for sure, a hard lock (a slight jerk when the RPMs drop).

So I'm wondering if this transmission of ours has some sort of dual-stage lock up or something in 4th gear and the 1st lock is soft. I just made up that phrase. Because I start 4th gear at 31MPH .

I know the transmission hard locks in 3rd gear at like 65MPH but that's not in 4th.

Um, it should be a 4speed auto with locking tq converter. (tq converter locking may feel like a 4-5 shift)


I've personally never felt what you are talking about, other than the torque converter locking up in 4th gear. Never felt a "5th gear" or felt the tq converter lock up twice.

Why are you bumping this? Its the torque converter locking/unlocking in and out of overdrive like he said.
