Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

I am thinking of getting a stage 2 or 3 cam for my 96 Civic EX. What will I need to get so my engine will be able to handle it and where would be a good place to find these parts?

Re: Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

Just go ahead and get the stage 3, you will need to upgrade the valvetrain with either the stage 2 or stage 3.

Re: Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

^IDK about that. Stage 3's are usually not very good for the street. They have a very high and rough idle.

Either way you should get a good dyno tune after installing either one. You also need stronger valve springs and retainers.

Re: Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

That's why I was thinkin about goin with the stage 3. Just didn't know if I'd need more parts for the stage 3. I just bought SRI and a Megan 4-2-1 header. You think Stainless steel springs and retainers would be good enough? I don't really drive fast but I do want the power to be there and I wanna hear her scream when I ask her to.

Re: Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

How much horsepower do you think I'd get out of a stage 3 cam, SRI, Cat Back Exhaust, Megan header, some type of engine management system(maybe hondata), upgraded intake manifold, and a bigger throttle body?

Re: Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

If you drive it on the street I would stick with the stage 2. You might need bigger injectors also. A good tune might compensate, but bigger injectors are the proper fix. I'm not sure what size would be appropriate.

Re: Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

Ya the stage 3 cams do make a bit rough idle lol. But it will still be alright if he upgraded the valvetrain. But ya if you DD this car then stage 2 might be for you and you will still have to upgrade the valvetrain and will need a engine management. And I am pretty sure you will not need injectors. If you did need injectors you can just grab rsx-s injectors.

So you think Stainless steel valve springs and retainers outta do the trick right? Is that all I would need for a stage 2 cam?

I think the smart thing to do is upgrade my connecting rods too. I heard these are a weak point in this engine and I don't wanna take chances.

Re: Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

I am not sure bout the d16y8 and the rods but i think you might be alright but if you want to go ahead and upgrade them then do it but it will be alot of work. If you do this yourself then make sure you go by everything that the manual says cause going in that deep is no joke.

I'll put the header and the SRI on myself but I'll leave the cam work, rod work, and engine management to the professionals. I'll be spending a lot of money so I wanna make sure it's done right. Will I need new (maybe lighter) valves or should the stock ones be alright? Sorry for so many questions but I know yall have a lot more experience than I do with all this.

I you don't need new valves at all. They would be a complete waste of money.

It wouldnt be a complete waste of money cause valves are not that expensive. But it would help alittle especially if he went ahead and ported and polished his head, he would get better flow and torque.

So I've gone ahead and bought SRI and a megan 4-2-1 header already. Didn't buy the cam yet because I gotta find out what's the better brands for a stage 2 and where I could get one. I also gotta find out if i will need cam gears or if I can use the stock cam gears. I wanna get titanium springs and retainers but I'll wait till I decide on a cam first.

Re: Stage 2 or 3 cam for D16Y8

What i hear is that a K-Pro is must for stage 2/3 for D17A2 (best gains and idle). Not sure which system for D16 though, but you might better call Hondata for more info. They also talk about a VAFCII, but that was for turbos.
Soldierboy, PM Boomerman, i am pretty sure he might have some more info even if he have a 7th gen, i am pretty sure he worked some 6th gen as well (friends' and others.).

Porting and polishing and bigger valves hardly does anything on these 16 valve engines. They already have a efficient design. You can actually hurt performance if you port them the wrong way. If you do get them ported w/bigger valves (which I think is a waste of money) then go to someone who really knows the engine well.

Definately get titanium retainers and stronger springs with those cams!

Not being stubborn....just wanna make sure I'm doing it right. I did pm Bomerman19 and he did tell me I can use the stock cam gear because I can't get any more power with a SOHC setup. He also told me his specialty is the 7 gen. Every time someone types a website for me to go to all I see is ***...stars in the place of words. Maybe if you skipped a space somewhere in there I'd be able to see it...idk. Thanks for the help skaidoji. I do appreciate it.

No prob man. I've gone ahead and bought the Crower Stage 2 NA cam and Crower Titanium valve spring and retainer kit. Now I just gotta figure out what kind of engine management to get. I think there are different hondata tuners and I'd like to know exactly which one I'd need. I will get it tuned once I get that.
