backfire while accelerating 97 LX

I have a 97 LX with 193K on it, fairly new timing belt, ignition coil/cap/rotor, etc. The spark plugs and wires have not been changed recently. Recently (several weeks after any work was done) it has started backfiring on acceleration. At first it was only under a heavy load such as merging, after a few days it has become almost every time I touch the gas. It does not do it while cruising at a constant speed, or on deceleration. It does not turn on the check engine light or give me any codes on my handheld reader. Any ideas?

I am having this same issue. I have changed my pcv valve. Plugs wires, cap and rotor. No oil present under cap. I did an intake cleaning. Still it is getting worse.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Check fuel pressure, fuel filter, fuel delivery?
Ignition timing?
Timing belt JUMPED TIME?

Got codes? Got data?
