Sealant or no sealant on Muffler gasket?
Sealant or no sealant on Muffler gasket?
I have bought a replacement OEM style muffler. Should I put sealant on the gasket like high temp copper whatever gasket maker? What would they do at Honda if replacing the muffler? Sealant or no sealant (dry)? Civic '98 DX D16Y7

Re: Sealant or no sealant on Muffler gasket?
Donut shaped cone type gasket, that uses long bolts with springs to hold the flanges together? The piece should fit snugly on the forward pipe, then the bowl part of the muffler flange must be able to flex and pivot on that tapered area of the new gasket (as the exhaust moves around while driving).
I have used real muffler cement to get the gasket to seal against the forward pipe (rust issues here), but would never put anything on the tapered part where the bowl part of the flange has to be able to move.
