Civic SiR Trunk Handle Not Working

Title says it all. Does/did anyone have any issues with the North American Civic Si's (3dr hatchback) trunk handle seizing? I was gifted my Si a few weeks back and it came with a seized trunk handle that only works if you fiddle around with locking and unlocking the trunk door a few times. I suspect it is related to a broken tube for windshield wiper fluid for the rear window causing the seizing but I wanted to see if anyone else experienced this and what they did to fix it.

Thanks and I look forward to your feedback!

Take off the plastic covers and inspect the handle mechanism. Usually there is a plastic retainer clips locking the movement rods in place.

Would not take much to cause your symptoms.

If you don’t fix the issue now, or remove the hatch inner cover while it’s openable, your going to have to break them off / dremel a access hole when it finally stops opening.

Will do, I'll open her up tomorrow and report back with my findings.

Thanks for the feedback

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: Civic SiR Trunk Handle Not Working

Plenty of other cars suffer handles seizing here in the salt belt. CRV tailgate, Fit/jazz hatch, Odyssey tailgate, etc.
Sometimes one can shoot some penetrating oil into the handle pivot areas and work it til it frees up without taking anything apart, other times I've taken the handle out to work with it and get it freed up......and sometimes it's just not worth jacking with it and it needs replaced.

Sometimes it's not the handle at all, maybe it's a cable or some other mechanism or linkage or pivot that needs help inside the door or hatch.
Open it up and find out!

I gave the WD-40 a try to no luck - I’m like 90% sure it’s a seized cable caused by leaking wiper fluid from the rear wiper but I’ll know for sure tomorrow once I open her up.
