02 Honda Civic Timing Belt Question

Hi, just bought an 02 Honda Civic LX (Canadian) and was curious if there was anyway the factory timing belt and water pump would be in it? Has 265000 kms (164000 miles) thanks

Re: 02 Honda Civic Timing Belt Question

They should have been changed around the 160,000 km (100,000 miles) point.
That is when I did mine. I had them replaced by my local dealer.

Definitely use OEM parts if you do it yourself.

And by your mileage, it looks like your are on your way to your next change.

More experienced posters will reply.

Re: 02 Honda Civic Timing Belt Question

The car is sound and runs great, previous owner only had it for 4000 kms and was bought from a used car dealer. In the next couples day may pull the valve cover and check and see if it has a new belt.

timing belts normally do not show any signs of wear, you can't tell by looking, that is why you need to go by recommended mileage/years,

a timing belt with 5,000 miles on it would normally look the same as one with 100,000 miles on it

Re: 02 Honda Civic Timing Belt Question

Sure it is possible it could be an original part.
If there is any hint of doubt as to whether or not it needs to be replaced, just do it.
Or you can roll the dice and maybe learn how much it costs to replace 16 valves.

Re: 02 Honda Civic Timing Belt Question

Yeah, it is better to maintain* a well-running engine, than it is to repair a top-end, and deal with the surprise issues that could very well crop up afterward.

*replace the belt and water pump

Re: 02 Honda Civic Timing Belt Question

Is there any way I could find out if the timing belt has been replaced? Don't wanna change one if it was done 20,000 kms ago.

Re: 02 Honda Civic Timing Belt Question

Ask the previous owner for all service records

TIME is just as important as mileage

Any idea what's so wrong with the car that the PO got rid of it so soon?

They bought him a car for the summer? Weird.

For me, gambling is like flushing my money down the toilet...

Re: 02 Honda Civic Timing Belt Question

if you have no previous records as to when the timing belt was changed, then your simply taking a gamble every time you turn the key and drive the car,

its YOUR CAR and your decision, we can't make that decision for you,

how long you want to take that risk is up to you,

a broken belt will end up costing more then replacing the belt now,

if it was me, i would replace the belt now, but thats just my 2 cent jack$$ opinion
