Cold air intake

So I've seen the cold air intakes and I'm pretty sure they are useless... for these cars anyways...

Has anyone ever modified the stock intake by just removing the resonator? And placing a straight tube in its place?

Re: Cold air intake

They are not useless: makes it sound like racecar, and gives better throttle response.

I always prefer a CAI to a SRI.

Yep, pvc is all you really need. You can DIY it from the hardware store or buy a cheap FleaBay one.

Re: Cold air intake

I always buy them for functionality, the fact that there is no heat shield and the filter sits on top of the trans and next to the engine means it's sucking in nothing but hot engine air. So I want to keep the stock intake so that it blocks hot air and comes from near the fender well, but I'd like to get rid of the resonator at least to help the flow.

I made my intake suing spare intercooler piping I had left over from my supra.

I read somewhere that both CAI and SRA give you NO extra power. However, they look cool and sound nice. My two cents LOL

Claims of "UP TO 30 HORSEPOWER" (et al) includes zero and even less, correct?
When you remove a tuned chamber you can actually lose power.

Exactly it's all BS! The only way to add SOME power to a D17 is by adding a header and stage 1 or above Cam. And even then you're lucky if you hit 130 hp. K20 swap is the way to go but it's gonna cost you!

Re: Cold air intake

Get the cold air intake that includes a T25/T3 manifold, hondata, shiny hair dryer looking thing, extra radiator looking thing, intake hissing thing and exhaust hissing thing. Those are the best cold air intakes.

That's what I have, a K&N with extra large filter and a heat shield. It's just for looks and sound though, it adds 0 power. LOL

I'm not looking for power, it's my daily so I'm looking to get the most mpg I can without spending a lot on performance parts.
