Is this default or is my car just ****ed? This only happens for the front windshield, every other setting I can actually turn off the AC, but not when defogging the front windshield. 2002 sedan non-Si, stock everything

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Correct operation, as designed.
The AC is supposed to be able to operate whenever any defroster position is selected.
The #1 job of an air conditioner is to dehumidify the air.

With your fan and key off, press/hold the Recirculate and A/C buttons down. Turn the key to the ON position. Keep pressing until the Recirc light flashes/extinguishes. Release. Done. You can now switch the A/C off after turning on the front defog.

My man! Thank you, it worked.
If anyone else is looking to do this, I had to do the above procedure twice. The 1st time the recirculate light stayed on. I also changed the fan setting in between the 1st and 2nd try but I don't think that makes a difference.
Also by OFF he means key position I and ON is key position II.
