Hi all,
I'm referring to the VTEC motor number, there is a one digit number under the serial number.
Does anyone know what is this number refers?

Re: D17A motor number explanation

-The D is the style of block
-17 is the engine displacement 1.7L
-and the letter or letter number combo is the head type

so all D17 engines should have basically the same block (maybe different internals)

but with a different head option
the head options are

A, A1, A2, A5, A6, A7, A8 and A9 (I did not find any info on an A3 or A4)

The D17a
Is the JDM 01-05 base civic, VTEC headed D17 block

***The fallowing info is from an app and should be cross referenced before used!!!***

D17A

Displacement: 1668 cc
bore: 75mm
stroke: 94.4mm
strock bore ratio: 1.25
deck height: 212mm
valvetrain: SOHC 16 Valve VTEC
camgear: 38 teeth
power: 127-130 hp
torque: 114 lb-ft

-a1 vs -a2 is more than just head options, granted, it's the biggest difference. Remember the -a1 engine has a lower CR in comparison to its -a2 counterpart

Re: D17A motor number explanation

Well ya I was just trying to give an example of what the engine number meant, not every difference... then we'd be here all night talking about each engine, the power differences the compression, the stock bolt-ons (exhaust mani vs header, o2 sensors...)

but good point on the cr. =D

Eh, o2 sensors are the same from a1 to a2. The difference happened in 04 for that. lol

Re: D17A motor number explanation

EDIT: Wrong thread. Oops.

I think the 2 below the serial number stamping is not relevant to the engine type.
