Re: 2002 Civic - combination switch recall?

I had my mechanic do some other work on the car today, and he replaced the headlights for me, at the same time. The old bulbs are good, including the high beam filaments. So now I need to get it in to Honda. They said they already replaced that switch in this car, before, so we have a serious safety issue.

Instead of replacing perfectly good bulbs, why didn't you have 'your mechanic' figure out why they don't work right?

Because the low beams were pretty dim anyway, possibly indicating that they were the originals. So I had him put in some that are 80% brighter.

OK then, why didn't you have 'your mechanic' figure out why they don't work right?

He said today that it's the switch, so this goes back now, to the Honda recall of that switch - the fact that they said it was replaced in this car once already, and the fact that it represents an extreme hazard.

Look for the schematics on this site.

Pretty certain you can ground a single wire for testing if it is indeed the switch or its associated wiring.

Honda says they already replaced the switch unit once. I'd throw it back in their court as a serious safety issue. In fact the dealership guy already agreed to take a look at it, while they do airbag recalls that it needs, too.

Ok then, why have you not taken the car to the dealer yet?

I needed to get the bulbs checked/changed, as I already explained. Why is this like the 3rd degree?

Because you've been going on about the same problem for a month already.

3 weeks ago the dealer asked you to make an appointment to get it checked, and you STILL have not done it?

We were in an accident in July, my sister was injured, and I've been taking her all over for medical treatments, PLUS trying to get my work done so we can pay the bills, if you really gotta know. I'm just trying to handle things so we stay afloat.

Re: 2002 Civic - combination switch recall?

The wire color RED/WHT is the low beam terminal, The headlight switch takes RED/WHT to ground to light them. If you ground the single RED/WHT lead going into headlight switch and still have issues... it is not the switch. (it will be bypassed)

Not sure what you mean. Where are these wires?

The low beams work, but when you flip the high beams, either full on, or to the momentary position ( back ), ALL the headlights go off. So I've been having to use it without touching the high beams.

Re: 2002 Civic - combination switch recall?

There is a line from the headlight relay(s) coil (ground path) to the headlight switch pin 7 BLU/RED.

If it looses it's ground path at pin 7 it would cause both lights to go out, high and low.

When the lights are out you could provide a temporary ground to pin 7 BLU/RED and see if they return.

The low beams are fine all the time, except when I push the high beams forward, to on, or back, to momentary, then everything goes out while I do, and returns when I stop it.

Re: 2002 Civic - combination switch recall?

With the single bulb per side set up... it uses only 1 filament at a time.

Switching to high beams, or flash would by design switch your low beams off, expecting the high beam filaments to be lit.

It could be you have a problem with the high beam circuit.

Yes, I saw that in the circuit diagram. It's a SPDT switch. But it's still the high beam switch that appears to be the problem. I have it scheduled to be checked this week.

Re: 2002 Civic - combination switch recall?

I dropped it off at Honda yesterday and just got this email:

Your civic needed the light switch combo switch, which I got covered. He is working on that now.
