2002 civic idle/thermostat issue, won't start frequently

My civic will always start when it's been sitting overnight, I'll start it up in the morning and warm up normally and run as a 2002 civic runs. I commute about 30/40 minutes to school and back. After that it seems rough for it to start. The thermostat idle will begin to drop/jump from the middle to cold and sometimes sit at C on the way back home from school (a twenty/thirty minute drive). My car will be at a normal temperature but it will feel really hot sometimes. What I've noticed when it doesn't start is, I'll turn the key and it'll sound like it's trying really hard to turn on but it just won't. As if it's stressing itself. After that I tried turning on my fan and I'll notice the needle sitting on C will begin to rise and I'll turn the key and it will stress for a little until I push the gas and it turns on. I've noticed a change in the car's performance, the rpm needle will be a little jumpy. What I mean by this is I'll push the gas and the the rpm needle will slowly rise normally as it should but it'll stall and drop down a number quickly. Also, I don't know if it's just me but it seems to perform better in the cold weather than when it's hot out. Could it be something major, is it worth fixing? I would like to know the complete severity of my vehicle. I'm no car savvy, I'm a complete nub so any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
