Does the EP2 have a VSS?

HI folks - trying to sort out my issues with the new civic.
Shes a 2004 EP2 with a few issues.
The speedo isnt working being one.
I've ran a diag test and the needle sweeps cleanly across the gauge so I figure not an instrument cluster problem.
I've read a few other articles people sayings it's the VSS which is located on top of the gearbox.
I can see one switch only on top of the gearbox - a 27mm nut holding it in place.
I removed this and it seems like a ball bearing on a sprung insert. Not what I was expecting.
Can anybody suggest what might be causing the speedo to not register any speed at all? and if I need parts...where I might acquire them.

Cheers.

Rob.
