Transporting Lumber (or large items) with a Roof Rack

Hello,

Does anyone here have any experience using a roof rack (if so which kind/brand) to transport lumber or any other types of large/wide items?

I will be be doing some renovations and would not have to deal with the hassle of renting a truck if I do not have to. I will need some relatively large pieces of lumber (4'x8' ply-board possible up to 10').

Does anyone have any experience transposing lumber on a roof rack?

PS: I know I can fit some things in the back withe seats down (2001 honda civic ex coupe)

Thanks!

It's handy to have friends with pickemup trucks.

Be careful of friends with modded trucks too

Turns out my suspension reinforcements failed. I'll be returning the welder I bought from Harbor Freight.

oh eff that's funny.

I bought an old beater pickup truck just because I have stuff to do like that and in no way will ever risk my car like that. That being said sure you can do it. Use your head though....the load capacity of my 6th gen is like 660 lbs... whatever yours is don't exceed that. Keep in mind your putting weight up high so your car is going to handle differently and probably brake differently as well. What ever your carrying make sure it's securely tied down....it's actually illegal if your load is not properly secured (for everyone's safety around you). Good luck and hopefully I won't see you out there.

i think renting a truck would actually make things alot easier. if your shopping at home depot they rent out trucks fairly cheap they also have AAA discounts if your a member or someone you know is a member.

That is a very special weld job!

Yakima makes nice racks.

I have fit some rather long pieces of lumber in my car with the rear seats down. Also if you can pre measure what sizes you will need, just get the lumber store to pre cut it for you. The plywood is the more difficult item to transport. I have seen some people around me put a blanket on their roof and strap the wood straight to the roof and tied it around the roof with the windows down, very special!

Re: Transporting Lumber (or large items) with a Roof Rack

i would never risk putting anything on the roof of one of these cars, i have put a few 2x4's (8 feet long) through the back seat and up on my dash before, and i was even able to fully close the trunk,

most lumber stores will deliver for free if you buy in quantity, or give you a good deal on a rental van, that would be the way to go,
