Getting a 2002 EX 5-speed in 2 weeks from a family member with 150k miles on the OD. I am not aware of the previous maintenance done to it, what should i be looking for on this model year and mileage? Also, what are some simple mods that are not complete "jacka**" mods that will just **** everyone else off, that are relatively easy to do? Thanks.

we can give you a long list of mods but it'd be worthless if you dont tell us your budget and what you're willing to spend.
just some stuff to be aware of:
1. you have a civic. if u wanted a fast car, you bought the wrong car. (especially a 7th gen) these cars are capable of going fast, but it will require a lot of money...and i mean $5000+
2. intake, exhaust, and headers don't do anything for our cars. it might make your butt dyno go haywire...but thats as far as it goes.
things that are worth it for our car:
-suspension (properly done with coilovers, camber kit, alignment)
-rims (only after suspension)
-retrofit HIDs system
-sound system (even just adding a headunit with subwoofer is great)
-tinted windows

$500-800 is a mid range suspension budget (closer to $800). Look into Ground Control sleeves for adjustable ride height. If you don't want adjustment do either Eibach, Tein, Neuspeed springs and Tokico blue shocks. Get your stance right first!
Then get wheels, whatever style you want. Since the car will be lowered you can measure for what wheels will fit rather then getting your dream wheels then finding out they rub when your lowered.
Sound system and HID's would be next, along with a lip kit.
Depends what you want to do and how much you want to spend. If you can try to look for used stuff. You can find some high quality stuff like Progress Coilovers or KW's in your budget if you don't mind buying used.
Forgot about rear sway bar upgrade. That's a good bang for your buck upgrade!
