If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: temp guage issue????
Are you Canadian? Is the car a 1.7L engine or a 2.0?
The center normal range on the temp gauge covers a wide range of temps, like 170F-220F all look about the same on the gauge.
Get a scantool, plug it in, check for codes first.
Then find the engine data list on the scanner.
Read the ECT (engine coolant temperature) in the datalist while you drive around.
After you get through the warmup period, the engine coolant temp while driving should stay between 180F (thermostat rating) to around 212-220 tops (fan switch ratings). It should not drop below 180F while driving after warmup.
If the temp gauge doesn't agree with the scanned data from the PCM, then you could have a cluster issue.
If the scanner shows too low ECT temps on the datalist, then you may have a sensor problem or stat problem----you should verify that with a real thermometer (or IR temp gun) though to be sure the engine really isn't running that cold (based on your assumption that it has "good heat", which is NOT an accurate assessment.)
Could easily be a flaky thermostat letting the engine run a bit too cold.
As little as 10 degrees too low might be enough to keep the gauge from coming up where it should be.
Please use a factory stat if you change it.
