My gas cap is busted and it's causing the check engine light to come on. I went to Honda and they want $50 for a new one. They said that the caps are model specific cause of the pressure in the tank and buying a Canadian Tire one will make the CE come on. How true is this and should I fork over $50?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: Gas cap
Does the exchange rate double the price?
$24 at Majestic. http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...L+TANK+%281%29
Most parts stores should be able to get gas caps that will work just fine.
Be forewarned: you may need to try a few to get a good one, and a non factory cap is one of the first things to suspect when there is an EVAP code later on.

Although ezone is right, when the ratchet went screwy on my factory cap (had to fight it and fight it to get it off at every fillup) I replaced it with a wal-mart cap. Cap was 8 bucks. If you are aware of that and willing to hassle with the possibility of having to exchange a couple I would recommend that. Stant is what they carry, and they have been around for ages and have a good track record. I would think you would have a wal mart all over the place up there too... Pain in the butt to have a light I know, but the gas cap code has zero effect on driveability, it is specifically and engine code. I would explain the theory of operation of all that if you cared....

I don't want to waste 8$ or 13$ or whatever on crappy caps over and over. I'll make some calls to scrap yards and see what I can find. Thanks

Most gas caps are made with good quality. I've used autozone gas caps before in my dad's camry. 6 years so far no problem.
The problem with junkyard gas caps are that they are probably really old and you might experience more problems than solutions
