most of the cost is for prep work, sanding down to bare metal, primer, then paint, then clear. if you do most of the prep work and prime/sand, they will charge much less to spray the color. another thing to consider, for a real factory finish, you will have to paint many other things that require removing parts. for example inside the car (door jams, trunk, etc) and under the hood which cant be done properly unless you pull the engine. but a paint job is all about compromise. do you care if the car is one color on the outside and another on the inside? if not, you save money. if you dont want the paint to last forever, save more money. just depends how long you want it to last and how good it looks. you can take it to maaco and pay $500 for them to spray over the outside paint, which will flake off a year later.

or go to college learning how to fix wrecked cars and in the process of it, learn how to paint. I painted mine for $330. That was about 80-90 hours labor that I of course did myself and then the $330 was materials cost for me
