Question Was it worth the time and money; your 2001 to 2005 tranny swap?

Hi Everyone,

I joined the forum last night. Though I love fixing things, I am not an automotive savvy person but I believe I have come up to speed somewhat in the past 2 weeks.

Anyhow, at present I am dealing with a broken transmission (appoximately 150k miles) calling out for a rebuild or a swap. After locating some 2005 automatic transmissions, I am seeking feedback from those who have gone down this same path.

My questions are:
  • What was the impact of your switching from a Honda Civic 2001 EX (or LX) transmission to a Honda Civic 2005 EX transmission?
  • How many miles have you clocked since the swap?
  • Have you had any reason to regret the swap?
  • Were there any issues doing the swap that necessitated doing modifications of any kind to the 2005 tranny to get it to fit the 2001 car?
Thanks for your feedback and advise!

I dont think most the active people on this forum has swapped a newer trans in, they've either rebuilt, went for manual transmission, or haven't broke down yet

Who knows though, maybe some of the inactive people might chime in on this

I'm still on 65k miles and haven't broke my tranny yet

Re: Was it worth the time and money; your 2001 to 2005 tranny swap?

Your not going to receive any massive amount of input on swapping from a 01 transmission to a 05 transmission, because although transmission problems are common the majority of the transmissions that failed did so within he first year or two before the later models proved themselves to be more reliable. That being said, the people driving 04-05 automatics have not had the same issues that the 01-03 automatics have, so it's safe to assume that the swap is beneficial. The speculation is that Honda changed a material used to make gaskets and as a result transmission reliability improved.

The only issue I expect you would have is that the 05 ex and 01 lx have a different speed sensor.

If you can manage to get a 2005 transmission go for. Probably cheaper than a rebuild.

Re: Was it worth the time and money; your 2001 to 2005 tranny swap?

Yeeea a lot of people that have done the swaps have either gotten rid of their civics or are no longer active here. That being said, I wouldnt "Swap" an 05 civic transmission in until yours is absolutely fried. Then I'd be on the hunt for an 05, or better yet a manual swap. Sorry nobody here really has a definite answer for you but hopefully this helps a bit.
