Brake question

This has happened twice so far.

I'm just driving along, and as I'm slowing down with my foot on the brake, I hit a big and hard pot hole (very common on Quebec roads). The brakes will get "loose" (the pedal feels limp, as if it's not pushing back on my foot anymore) and make a loud sound. It's not screeching, but it's similar, almost as if air is gushing out of somewhere, but not really. It's weird. . I'll release the brakes and then it'll all be back to normal. Anyone know what's going on?

Re: Brake question

Brake line pressure? I dunno...

Its obviously the front breaks because the drums in the back dont do much for stopping you..

It might be possible that there is an issue with your line and when you hit the pot hole, your suspension compresses and the brake line travels with it, as it should, and puts stress (or relieves it) on your break line... Enh, dunno about that.

Check your break lines, and do a bleed... getting your head in the wheel well will tell you many times more then what this thread might be able to shoot out in guesses.

Re: Brake question

Alright thanks. I was hoping this was a known problem with a name and all. When I have time I'll have a look under the car and see if I find anything, but I won't even know what to be looking for. I'll maybe take some pics and bump this thread whenever that time comes.

Thanks again

(And yes it's definitely from the front brakes)

And I forgot to mention that the car doesn't actually loose any braking power. Even though the pedal gets loose and the noise happens, the car is still braking like it was just before the pot hole. Next time it happens, I'll see what happens if I press harder on the brakes while the pedal is "loose"

Re: Brake question

if your car has abs it could be the abs kickin in i know on gravel roads it does that for me will make a weird noise and the pedal feels useless just let go of the breaks and reapply. in my opinion the abs system has gotten me and a buddy of mine with a em2 in more trouble then good.

Re: Brake question

I don't think it's the ABS. I accidentally activated the ABS on the first day I had the car when I was "testing" the brakes. It's very different from how the ABS works. There's no rapid engaging and disengaging of the brakes, and the ABS light never comes on or flashes (which I believe is should if the ABS activates).

Edit: Regardless, I'm going to try to replicate the situation and maybe make a video. MAYBE it's the ABS, but it's definitely not the ordinary ABS.

when looking under your car, check to see if it looks like any fluid has been leaking all over the place. If your brake line has a hole or anything like that it may spray the brake fluid and then the brake dust will build up on the fluid sprayed. If it looks like everything is okay, I would bleed the brakes because sometimes air in the line makes the brake feel looser then it should. I have never heard of this issue happening. I also live in a very bad area with a bunch of pot holes, NYC and northern New Jersey. Here it is basically unstoppable to hit pot holes. You sway from one hole into another. I haven't experienced this issue and i know I have gone into pot hole while braking also.
