Putting a 2004 transmission in a 2001

I asked this question in the general section, but thought I should ask it here too.

My sister-in-law has a 2001 Civic LX with a manual gearbox. The tranny has makes a loud noise when the clutch is engaged. I have a friend who is a mechanic check it out. Checking out the car and the forums, it seemed that the input shaft bearing was the suspect. However, after replacing it, the noise was still there. He also checked the clutch disc and pressure plate, but both of them were fine. My mechanic friend asked a tranny guy he knows for his opinion. He stated that we need a rebuilt or a used tranny.

I found a low mileage (about 40,000 miles) 2004 tranny at a local parts place, but I want to get your thoughts about putting a 2004 tranny in a 2001. I think it should work since 2004 and 2001 are a 7th gen civic. Thoughts?

You are correct, in theory, 2004 and 2001 are from the same 7th generation.

might want to check the throwout bearing too. but yea, you can swap trans's from year to year (01 to 05) as long as it's still a manual of course.
