Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

I have some fuel system work done but I personally have nothing with a regulator as my fuel is constantly at 40psi. Are you have problem's? like does it fluctuate, is it constantly low/high, or do you just want to controll it?

Hey gear I have some questions about leds. can you use just one resistor to run several leds? Like currently I am soldering 1 resistor to every led and its very time consuming. I want to know if I could place the same resistor at the 12v power supply and place the leds in parallel. It's hard to explain but I can make some pics to explain better.

^about the leds.

yes you can (if you get a resistor with higher tolerance). but it is not advise. because you will exceed the resistor's capacity.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

the formula is Watts = volt x amp

the resistor u have is a 1/4w resistor

so simple math tells u that

1/4=12v x amp

1/48=amp

.02=amp

.02amp = 20mA

so since ur LED consumes 20mA, and the maximum tolerance of ur resistor is 20mA

you cannot put anymore LEDs for that one resistor

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

Alright that makes sense. Now the question is what would I need to run, say 50 leds. I need to use as little wiring around the leds themselves. do they make 10W 470 ohm resistors?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

you wire as many as you can in series, then use a resistor for each series of leds. then wire each series of leds in parallel. thats the safest way to do it and then you only need 1/2 watt resistors cause you will be using up most of the voltage with the leds and only a lil bit for the resistor. it depends on the leds and their forward voltage. if you use red and it has 2v, then you could hook up around 6 together in series and use a resistor to account for the rest of the power input (14.4v).

not to my recollection.

you might want to run them in a series.

for example (JUST AN EXAMPLE SO U CAN GET THE IDEA):

if u need a 470ohm resistor @ 12v to run 1 led.

try running them in a series. so if u ran them in a series you would use a

150ohm resistor and a series of 3 leds.

Anyway I found this one site along with a handful of others.

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=016-470

Is there any problem with using higher watt resistors then what you technically need? Like a 10W would support .8A if my math is correct. Do resistors pull all of that current? or will they simply pull what the circuit requires but up to their rated amounts. And I have a site for measuring resistors and a few more electrical circuits. I had thought about doing the led's in series and then parallel but it makes my job harder for what I want to do with the under glow. I never knew they made resistors with higher power ratings and still had low resistance.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

the wattage has no bearing on the leds. it is only a measure of how much power they can take without burning up. so if you are only wiring a series of 5mm leds and you only need a 0.25w resistor, using a 20w resistor will be the same thing except much bigger. but you also have to look at the ohm value which is whats important for keeping the leds working. there are only certain types of resistor made and usually the big only are only available in low ohm values.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

^i dont think his question was about runnning them in a series. it was one resistor brached off into like 5 leds...

bak when i was doing research on leds, i read that the wattage rating on the resistor is the maximum that the resistor can handle. unless i am mistakenly remembering something else (which is possible beacuse i been busting my brains this last week for finals)

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

lol double post much? Anyway the resistor was rated at 10W 470ohm +/- 10%. So other then the fact it is more expensive, I could use it just like my 1/4W 470ohm +/-5%, right? I guess the most important thing to me is the current draw. The resistor isn't going to determine the current, the led is, correct? I now have some other wiring problems but I believe I have them solved if the resistors work the way I need them too. Thanks for you input guys.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

So last night I ran to Radioshack and one of the employees there used to own his own electronics store. I asked him several questions about using these resistors and pretty much figured out that they are perfect. The resistors only draw as much power as the components they supply power to. He said the only problem with these resistors is they cause a lot more heat and are around 5 times the size. I ordered them and should be here by tuesday.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

Alright I got one for anyone that can answer this. I want to remove power steering properly. I have read its fairly simple and all you need is the subframe and steering rack out of a dx or other similar non ps 6th gen. I was also looking at doing an eps rack as well but have read no info on such a swap other then its been done. My question is more or less how do I seperate the rack from the steering column or do I need to use the manual column as well. If anyone has any information on placing eps in a 6th gen that would be nice as well.

I want to do this to clear up the engine bay as much as possible and not so much for the weight reduction so any opinions or ideas on alternatives would be nice as well. TIA

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

Well like I said it started as relocating the ps resivoir and ended up replacing the entire system. I wouldn't mind keeping my ps but at the same time i drove my buddies lude with the belt cut and it felt very responsive. I've heard a lot of bad things about just cutting the belt aka cheap way out. Which is also why I started looking into eps. All the benefits of ps without the engine clutter.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

a member here did a really good writeup to convert the ps to a breather style system. more responsive than cutting belt, and you dont have to trash your current setup.

TIA
Have you taken the belt off and tried driving with out power steering?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

On my vic, no, but I drove my buddies 95 lude and had no problems other then trying to do a u-turn in a development at 5 mph. then i stalled it when I tried pulling out from a hill, oops lol. But I haven't done it to mine due to an old mechanic I used to work with saying that if the pump just sits there, it creates resistance to the fluid that tries to move around causing the fluid in the rack to stay where it is, go bad, then damage the rack itself causing headaches.
