Unhappy OBD2 Scanner Not Communicating With ECU?

Hi everyone,

I own a 2006 Civic. The CEL came on a couple of weeks ago. Around the same time, I noticed a rubber-like smell coming from the exhaust pipe under the car. Upon visual inspection, I noticed a plastic-like residue on the exhaust pipe. Not sure where this is coming from. Not sure if its related to the check engine light. Anyway, I tried using a OBD2 scanner to read the codes from the car's ECU. Tried multiple times, every time I got an error message. The scanner error code indicated "No Communication" between the scanner and the ECU.

Just to make sure that the scanner was working properly, I plugged it to a 2006 Toyota Sequoia. The scanner worked and no errors were reported.

Not sure what to do here. Is it possible that there are other scanners that will communicate with my civic? Is it possible that there is a problem with my civic that would prevent communication between the scanner and the vehicle's ECU?

I would appreciate your input on this.

Thanks,
Carlos

Yes you need a scanner that operates on protocal

ISO 9141 and 9141-2 for the 2.0l 2006 civic si

and

CAN 29bit for the 1.8l civic.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

I noticed a plastic-like residue on the exhaust pipe
Ran over a shopping bag in the road and it stuck to the exhaust? That happens a lot.
