Maintenance Schedule clarification 2013 Civic EX

Hello, the manual says to use the Maintenance Minders to determine when to have service done and what. However, the service records manual indicate the brake fluid needs to be replaced every 3 years. The dealer also suggested to service the Transmission Fluid & Fuel Induction every 3 years. Is the dealer correct or is he just trying to make me spend more service costs?

Thank you.

Re: Maintenance Schedule clarification 2013 Civic EX

While it's good in theory, there are shortcomings. It' works well for many users, but some others could see more benefit from other schedules.

The maintenance minder system has no way to directly monitor the condition of anything on the car.....It is based solely on a model. It depends on "average driving". It depends on fluids and parts meeting certain specifications.
You can follow its suggestions if you wish, or maintain it differently whatever you choose.
Whatever method you choose, keep records of whatever you do to it.

It will vary asking for oil changes (and tire rotations) based on how you drive the car. I've seen anywhere from 4000 miles to well beyond 12,000 miles allowed on oil changes, it all depends on how the car is driven. Some people still want oil changed every 3000 too, or 5k, or whenever earlier than the minder system. Not a problem, just reset the system at that time and you will get to see the suggested maintenance item numbers at that time on the display

.....or max one years time for an oil change if your annual mileage is super low.

It will ask for engine and cabin air filters at an oil change interval near 25k miles and roughly every 25k thereafter. Most are in need by that time, but again the system cannot "see" if they are actually clean or dirty, so it may behoove you to check first. It cannot ever know if the filters were actually changed when it said to, ignored, or changed prior to being suggested.

Transmission fluid... I think the minder system will vary the intervals for this depending on how it is driven......but our shop still strongly recommends ATF every 30k or more often. (this is based on years of experience with complaints and problems, not greed)

Brake fluid flush every 3 years because the fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture), and if it's a manual trans replace the clutch system fluid as well. This time based 3yr schedule has been in use for decades among almost every car manufacturer.

Antifreeze replace around 100k or 10 years whichever comes first, then every 5y/50k thereafter.

Tune up (4 spark plugs) every 100k

You should check your owners manual to see what it says about the fuel injection cleaning/induction services.
Then have the dealer to show you in your own owners manual where exactly it says to do it.
(also see: "Wallet flush")
If your engine were D.I. (direct injection) it might actually benefit from a service such as that, but a 2013 Civic was not equipped with direct injection..

DO use top tier gasoline religiously!

Don't be cheap. 3 years on ATF and brake fluid is plenty long.

Rebuilding the transmission or crashing into a tree will cost you more (I'm sure we all know here that the fluids could be pushed further, but why risk pushing the fluids to the failure point?).
