Oil change, use synthetic?

Local Honda dealer recommends to using semi-synthetic motor oil in my '10 civic, and I'm fine with that. But my question is I do a lot of local driving but don't put that many miles on the car (8-10 months between changes), so any benefits in spending the $$ on fully synthetic oil change?

IMO, no.

The normal 5w20 semi synthetic oil offered by the dealer covers all the the engine protection needs, as long as you follow recommended service intervals.

If you want a little easier starting in the bitter cold, you can run 0w20. Their 0w20 bulk oil should be full synthetic now. I've been running it in many Hondas that originally called for 5w20.

With either of these, you can follow the maintenance minder (15% oil change) or one year, whichever comes first.

Re: Oil change, use synthetic?

Synthetic is the best for cooling, anti burning and protection over distance.

It's also usually the same price or cheaper to run, price per mile, or at least it is here in BC.

The shop where I work charges:

Basic Mobil 1000 $55 for 5,000km or 3106miles = or $10 per 909km

Blended Mobil 2000 $70 for 8,000km or 4970miles = $7 per 800km = $10.01 per 1144km

Synthetic Mobil 1 $89 for 10,000km or 6213miles= $8.90 per 1000km = $10.06 per 1130km

Check your prices and see which one works out to be cheaper per mile.

Re: Oil change, use synthetic?

I use M1 0-20 since new. Used "blend" once and thought, all the pil mfg has to do is legally use 1% of synthetic and call it a blend.

My thoughts are: if you want to keep it for a long long time, why not use the best. The other side of the coin..if your going to unload it three / four years from now...who's going to know, unless the new buyer wants maintenance records which my show " regular " oil. Good luck.

thats right..

remember that any manufacture out there wether were talking about
one that makes high end vehicles or not . warranty on most of them is
5 years 100,000miles they can and will extend oil changes because they
know the vehicles engine can take it up to that point BUT". ..if Lets say you do
happen to have a problem

just short say a few thousand miles out of warranty even though it was
maintained and seen at a dealer they can and chances are refuse you
i have heard of that happening more than once before . some manufactures
have rediculouse extended oil change intervals reason being i can think off?
wear the engine down so you buy another vehicle another vehicle being

same make different model. i take care of my vehicles and only use quality
parts and fluids etc... its well worth the investment you get back peace of
mind knowing its going to be reliable for a long time.

Engines run cleaner, oil additives are better, it's better for the environment. Changing any sooner then recommended is a waste IMO. Oil and engine technology is leaps and bounds better then when oil was changed every 3k miles.

Oil additives and its packages have gotten better especially on synthetic oil
many will argue that under the right conditions you could probably go 10-12 thousand
usa miles on single oil change if you lived in a warm climate like florida where its a steady
year round warm/hot temp and drove xx amount of miles
in-between your stops it might be possible under the right conditions. i have

heard of that being possible. BUT here where i live being in ontario, canada
with cold and hot temp its definately NOT possible. oil changes on my Civic
are done at 5,000kms pushing or extending oil changes too long beyond that results in
trouble and wears your timing chaine down if your engine is equipped with one have a
look at the link.

Re: Oil change, use synthetic?

Read post 21 down below in my thread p1009 error . Pretty sure most of the original changes done at dealer on mine since they were life time free were probably their bulk dyno oil more then likely. I seriously doubt it make little difference with modern oils, a Honda and it actually gets done. My friend had that ill-designed Toyota Corolla 4 that stops up in the head and it did just on synthetic at 90k. I just run 5W-20 Mobile 1 now since my local dealer go tired of me freeloading on the original free deal and not doing service and started messing with my two Hondas. Just cost him a brand new 25K car sale a few months ago. Take that Peninsula Honda

Re: Oil change, use synthetic?

Cheapest 0W20Oil I've found in Canada is the mail order from Costco. 3 jugs Castrol EDGE for 109.99 delivered to your door. or a 22.7Ltr (5 Imp Gals) for 139.99. Once my car is past the first 2 changes (from dealer) will move on to this cheap source

Re: Oil change, use synthetic?

Hmm, where is your Canadian Tire, the 0-20 Synthetic at the C.T just down the road is 52 per 5 L jug. Although it is on sale on their website at the moment for 33. So I'm off tomorrow to get a jug.

Re: Oil change, use synthetic?

Since i have no real need to go to the deal for my car being a 2010, theres is near by independent shop that offers conventional oil change for $50 and synthetic for $80. So sounds like the $80 for synthetic isnt outrageous, although does seems high. The dealers semi-synthetic oil which is what they recommend is $45. seems like a large different between semi and full. does the oil really coat that much more or is it labor?

Re: Oil change, use synthetic?

Not labor. They go through the same motions, whether they refill with mineral or synthetic oil.

As for synthetic oil costing more, if you DIY it doesn't have to cost more.

Currently, Pennzoil is offering a $10 rebate on 5 qts synthetic oil.

US only I think
http://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/promot...Rpb25hbDE4Lw==

And, we are waiting for Exxon-Mobil to start with their $12 off deals for this year.
